Episode Summary

Part 3
After storming off in frustration from his military regiment, Shaka travels to a tribe skilled at metal smelting and has a spearhead commissioned per his own specifications. When completed, the weapon is personally empowered by "The Nameless One", who warns Shaka that it would eventually possess him. Shaka, now on a path of revenge after receiving the blessing of the King of the Mtetwas to train a special unit in his tactics, leads the Kingdom to many battle victories and allows Shaka to ascend to the rank of General. He finally defeats the Zulu Kingdom, killing his father in the process, and reclaiming his birthright as King of the Zulus. Shaka then sets his sights on defeating the largest Paramountcy in region after gaining complete control of the entire Mtetwa military.moreless

  • The evolution of a warrior...

This installment stands out within the miniseries as it begins to get to the meat of the development of Shaka, who evolves to become a brilliant but driven military strategist and soon-to-be despot. Henry Cele's commanding presence never lets up and he basically continues to steal the show. This coupled with the continuing use of brief, specially-lighted scenes that weave the supernatural into the storyline, helps to give the audience a visual sense of the mythology that was apparently copious in the oral histories of these people.

The "casts of thousands" used for the warriors and subjects, along with the musical performers, must also be commended (along with the costumers), as they added a fascinating cultural context to the story.

    Definitely a highly-rated episode.moreless
