  • Running theme: Child Abuse. While Patrick goes cold turkey and Mandy has to make a decision about Joe, Danny with Liam in tow heads to Liverpool to find his Dad

    8.5
This is a strong episode as although not immediately apparent it has a running theme of Child Abuse linked in with everyone's dilemmas. Despite such a serious subject the show along with its other stories is still able to deftly switch from Drama to comedy as usual.

The first strand involves Danny and his search for his dad in Liverpool. Danny being deaf and supposedly mute needs an interpreter and take Liam with him who has been skipping school. When Ian finds out he's not happy. This was almost a semi-conclusion to Danny's story and the fact that his Dad beat him when he was young was the most visible form of the Child Abuse theme. The fact that it ends in such a bad way may pop up in later episodes, but for now it was a shocking end to the episode, yet to be fair his dad was a right b*****d to him. We also learn that Danny can talk as well which was a nice touch.

The theme came through with Mandy in having to choose whether she should get back with Joe. This storyline had Frank as the wise sage and it popped up a few interesting questions. Now you can usually tell a David Threlfall directed episode by the fact that his character (Frank) is not in it much, and I don't usually care much for this mode of the character but it made sense here. I liked the fact that you couldn't tell if he was talking about himself or his own dad (who we know could be abusive). I liked this ambiguity from him and suspect it's a bit of both but mainly his dad he's on about. He is right to point out to Mandy that her daughter Katie is who matters in this situation most though.

Last form of the theme comes from Paddy's Daddy issues. While going cold Turkey he sees his dad who seems to have maybe been abusive when he was young as well as leaving his family (much like Monica Gallagher has done to her kids it seems). This was clearly to fit in with the theme but made the whole cold turkey sequence even more interesting and psychological than it already was. Loved the bit in the burning dessert.

Elsewhere on the Estate was Meena and going up against her Mum Yvonne by showing her t*ts a lot. She even gets a job cleaning Lillian's whore house and models underwear at a party. Although everything else had it's comedy moments this was the comedy story this week and was really funny in the most part especially at the party and Stan walking in on Meena taking photo's of herself. This was a fantastically crafted episode and although for a few series now Shameless has been more like 70% Drama/30% Comedy compared to the first two which were more 60/40 (or 70/30 for series 4 I guess)on the comedy side this proves it's still a great show despite this difference. What's more this evolution has benefited the majority of the character's as well in making them even more three dimensional.moreless
