... Showtime has decided on premiere dates for three of its returning midseason shows. Shameless will return on January 12. Episodes will return on January 12. House of Lies will return on January 12. They'll all return on January 12! [Showtime via press release]

BUSINESS TIME

... A few new details on the potential Supernatural spin-off have emerged. Executive Producers Jeremy Carver and Robert Singer say the show will take place in Chicago and feature much more of an ensemble cast, as opposed to its parent series, which travels the country (and Canada!) and concentrates on the Winchester brothers. The backdoor pilot will be introduced in the 20th episode of the Supernatural's upcoming ninth season, and if all goes well, will become its own show in 2014. [EW]

... Okay everyone, this joke has gone on long enough. Syfy aired Sharknado for a third time on Saturday night and it climbed in the ratings AGAIN. Its first airing in mid-July drew 1.4 million viewers (all of whom tweeted until their fingers bled), its second airing a week later drew 1.9 million viewers, and its third airing on Saturday picked up 2.1 million viewers. Either people are really late to this internet-fueled phenomenon, or sharks have learned how to watch television. [EW]

... Ever-exciting syndication news! Reruns of CBS's Hawaii Five-0, purchased by TNT back in 2011, will begin airing on the network starting Thursday, August 8. The series will air back-to-back episodes on Thursday nights right from the beginning, so you can figure out who's a good guy and who's a bad guy (hint: if someone doesn't speak English, he's bad). [TNT via press release]

... Adult Swim has announced a date for the returns of Aqua TV Show Show and Squidbillies. August 11 at midnight and midnight:15. [Adult Swim via press release]

... Animal Planet's Treehouse Masters has been renewed for a 13-episode second season due in 2014. The show follows master treehouse builder Pete Nelson as he masterfully builds treehouses. What: A show about a guy who builds treehouses on a cable channel called Animal Planet? Little known fact, Pete Nelson is actually a bear. [Animal Planet via press release]

CASTING NEWS

... The lovely Anna Torv (Fringe) and former Brat Packer Jennifer Jason Leigh (Some Kind of Wonderful) have joined Ryan Murphy's HBO pilot Open. The mature drama focuses on sexuality and relationships, and it stars Scott Speedman and Wes Bentley. Leigh and Torv will play a couple, and yes, no need to do a double-take, they're both girls. Torv previously played a lesbian in the original version of Mistresses, and Leigh has experience in female infatuation from her role in Single White Female and I don't know why I'm mentioning either of these tidbits other than to show off my encyclopedic knowledge of women who've played lesbians on television. [Deadline Hollywood]

... Showtime has a horror series in the works called Penny Dreadful, and now it has its leads: Josh Hartnett (Pearl Harbor) and Eva Green (Casino Royale)! The series will be set in Victorian England and weave together the origin stories of several monsters from literature, such as Frankenstein, Dracula, and Dorian Grey. [THR]

... John Ratzenberger (Cheers' Cliff Claven) will guest-star on an episode of Bones. He'll play one half of a couple who's on a retreat in the second episode. [EW]

I just can't wait for Open. After Fringe was wrongly canceled, I was worried that my girl Anna Torv wouldn't find another awesome show. Well, I hope this one's it. Plus, she's playing another lesbian. <3

You had me at Anna Torv, but lost me at Ryan Murphy. Besides, she's basically doing the same thing she did on the original mistresses.

Eva Green + Showtime = the promise of loads of nudity. I think I'll give Penny Dreadful a chance! (I was going to anyway, but now it's confirmed.)

I'll watch anything starring Anna Torv, she's incredible, so I guess I'll have to add Open to my list too!

I like-a-da Shameless.. And what is this about a Super-notch spin-off??? This is really peaking my interest. Nothing better then those brothers just throwing down on a Wendigo or some Croatoanes. Bam! You just got Winchestered!

Yay! Anna Torv is returning to TV. By the way, that is a very lovely picture of her, if I may say so since the word "lovely" usually does not belong to my vocabulary.

Wow that picture of Anna is stunning! I will check out any show with Scott Speedman in it, but happy to see Anna Torv and Wes Bentley in it too!

It will be a bit weird to see Torv without the Bishops, all Fringe-less but good for her!

I can't wait for House of Lies - I think it is a totally underrated show though it would be better served by a longer format than the 21 min eps... It is most definitely not a comedy...

I thought Episodes was a Summer show? Either way, I'm glad its coming back!
Penny Dreadful sounds very interesting!
Still haven't watched Sharknado. I read Price's "We watched it for you", and then sent it to everyone I know who might even have thought about watching the movie.
I'm doing my bit, how about you?

I wasn't that interested in Open until now, which is odd, considering I though Torv quite emotionless on Fringe (I'm going to get hated on for saying that, aren't I?). But, yeah: HBO, a little more plot details, Ryan Murphy, and now LESBIANS!, I think I might have to check this out.

And I'll watch Penny Dreadful too.

Loved your bits about Sharknado and the guy being a bear!

What about Californication? Are they pushing it in another time of the year?

They're keeping it for spring where it will probably be paired with Nurse Jackie.

I'm glad Anna Torv is back in the game but her show sounds awful.

Anna looks absolutely lovely in that picture. I don't care about anything else, only need to stare at that for a couple of hours more.

Excellent! Three Showtime series I watch are having their season premieres on the same date. Got my calender marked for some primetime viewing that night.

As for the Supernatural spinoff, it should star DJ Qualls, who's recurring now as Garth. I'd like to see a little comedy and he'd be a good fit for it.

So NBC has gone crazy with miniseries since Under The Dome's success... But The CW doesn't really have any reason to be going crazy with all these spin-offs, when have they had a successful one?

Arrow was never really a Smallville spin-off, The Originals hasn't even started yet, and yet they think a Supernatural and Arrow spin-off are a good idea? History shows that most of these shows are likely to fail.

So true - It seems they are not very confident to create successful new series so they go for the spin-mania...

Looking forward to Open, Penny Dreadful and the return of all those Showtime shows.

John Ratzenberger is more like the guy who's been every single Pixar movie ever!

Aqua TV Show Show, because your DVR should work harder, apparently. Aqua Patrol Squad One was my favorite, best opening credits. Then again, Carl is on fire in the promo and a monkey came out of another monkey's butt, so that's a plus.

I wasn't a fan of the Aqua Something You Know Whatever credits.

Yay for more Anna Torv and a potential Supernatural spin-off (as long as it's something of an equal quality).

Boo for sharks. And tornados.

All of this! Wait no I take that back, not boo for sharks. I love sharks. But absolutely not when combined with tornadoes.

Well, with more people seeing Sharknadoes these days, vigilance is needed...lol...

Penny Dreadful sounds great. Anything with Eva Green in it and I am in. I watched that until I couldn't stand anymore the huge mistake in the actor they chose for Arthur. But please don't make Hartnett try a British accent.

shoot the potential that josh hartnett might do a british accent went over my head. I would likely not be pleased either.

Yea Shameless! Yea House of Lies!

5.4M people tuned in to watch Sharknado. WTF?

"The series will air back-to-back episodes on Thursday nights right from the beginning, so you can figure out who's a good guy and who's a bad guy (hint: if someone doesn't speak English, he's bad)." Hahaha. Funny because it's sad.

Anna Torv and Eva Green, will have to check those two out.

I am pretty sure Jennifer Jason Leigh was not in Some Kind of Wonderful. However, she was in Fast Times at Ridgemont High.

You are correct. He's thinking of Mary Stuart Masterson, I assume, because nobody would mistake Lea Thompson for Jennifer Jason Leigh.

About time the Nielsen folks have included sharks in the ratings numbers...a portion of the audience long ignored. Maybe its time for a Sharknado app...a crossover with a major network show...a mini series of Sharknado set during a historical period....

Yeah, I obviously know them both personally and can't judge whether or not I'd enjoy their new work based on past performances/the things they normally handle on their other 50 shows on the air.
