Episode Summary

At Doom Tower, Hordak has created a machine called the Magna Beam, which can drain the energy of his rebel captives. Adora learns that she was stolen from her parents as a baby by the Horde, who brought her up to follow their evil ways; and not only that, He-Man is her twin brother. She uses the sword to become She-Ra, Princess of Power, and sets out to rescue He-Man and foil Hordak's scheme.moreless

  • He-man sneaks into the Fright Zone only to be captured by the Horde. Hordak hopes to use his Magnabeam to send the Whispering Woods and the Great Rebellion to the Valley of the Lost, and He-man must rely on Adora to come to her senses and rescue him.moreless

She-ra finally makes her first appearance three episodes into the series, but it is worth the wait. Even though she doesn't appear until the last few minutes of the episode, the anticipation is great and the resulting action is exciting. It's a wonderful and memorable scene when the Sorceress explains to Adora who she really is and her relationship to He-man. Almost the entire episode takes place in the Fright Zone, so viewers get to see more of the Horde's main headquarters. Members of the Great Rebellion, and Cringer, are only seen for a few short minutes. Bow's salute to Adam as he heads off toward the Fright Zone is very cheesy, but I think this was done purposefully because Adam appears slightly embarassed by it. The first transformation scene and the first appearance of Swift Wind are fantastic. Absolutely no qualms about this episode.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (5)

    • Originally Adora was to say, "By the grace of Grayskull!" to transform into She-Ra.

    • Aside from being the episode to feature the first appearance of She-Ra, it also contains the first appearances of Swift Wind and Imp.

    • In the recap from Beast Island, Adora is not wearing the brown robe she wore during the episode when the Trooper shoved the boy that was taking his horse; also, Shadow Weaver's magic was different than it was during the episode when she was putting Adora to sleep. In addition, in the racap He-Man frees himself and is shown with the Sword of Power in his scabbard, but during the actual episode Kowl helped free He-Man, who did not have his Sword of Power in his scabbard.

    • Look closely, the animation of Adora tossing in her sleep is reused from the first episode where the Sorceress is tossing in her sleep.

    • At the beginning of the scene in which Adora is waking up from her nightmare, you can see a cannon next to the window. But when Adora wakes up and looks outside through the window, the cannon is gone.

  • QUOTES (2)

    • Hordak: Well, Rebel. You smashed my magna-beam and saved your worthless friends.
He-Man: So I did. Pretty good, huh?

    • Adora: Oh no my brother!
(Adora is taking out her sword)
Adora: For the Honor of Grayskull.
      (Adora becomes She-Ra Princess
of Power for the first time.)

      She-Ra: I am She-Ra!

  • NOTES (1)

    • This was the first ever appearance of the show's star, She-Ra. This episode was also the only part of the 5-parter to be written by Bob Forward, rather than Larry DiTillio.
