She Stoops to Conquer is a 2008 film adaptation of Oliver Goldsmith's original comedy of errors. In fact, the producer did not change a single word from the 1773 play. Charles Marlow (Mark Dexter) easily seduces women of a lower stature. However, his smooth attitude fails him when matched with a woman stemming from an equal social class. He journeys to a friend of his father's with dreams of wedding the lovely Kate only to endure the practical jokes of her brother, Tony Lumpkin (Miles Jupp). Love triangles, mistaken identities, and cunning pranks all make their way over in perfect translation. The film is admittedly difficult to take on from the outset. The dense poetic language and outdated terms give the play a high price of admission. However, those who are willing to stick through the first 30 minutes and improbable plot are rewarded with a literary work that is still relevant over 200 years later.
