Sheena Queen of the Jungle aired weekly and to the delight of both young and old. This show gave the appearance of strength and individualism to the much underestimated young women of the day. Wheather she was helping hunters to recieve their just desserts, battling Amazon villagers or just doing the right thing for strangers in a strange land - Sheena always came out on top. This show was better for youngsters than cartoons in many ways: I shows that athleticism, a fair-handed philosphy and humanitarianism can serve well in any environment. It even gives a tip o' the hat to nature lovers at least once every episode.
Long before Xena, Wonder Woman and Buffy there was Sheena, Queen of the Jungle. The year was 1955 and television was young and in black and white. This series was bold and place a woman as the hero. She was strong and fought as better than most men. She was bright, compassionate and beautiful. The show is based on a comic book. As a result you would expect the plot and acting to be melodramatic. You would expect the two dimensional characters. Instead you find characters that you care about that have flaws and virtues. Technically, the show is well shot especially considering its age. It has some wonderful wild animal sequences in each episode. The plots are simple, direct, and well written. You know that the heroes will win over the evil in the end. You know that the bad men will find justice. What you do not expect is to find the shades of grey and humor. I suggest you watch it and see where our modern day strong female roles started. Sheena is as strong a character as Captain Kathryn Janeway is on Voyager.
