Nobody knew much about hallucigens when Conan Doyle's story was first published, so the sting in its tale - which explains the title - was a pretty effective one. This adaptation is, like too much of this series as a whole, a little prosaic, though the contortions on Douglas Wilmer's face when Sherlock Holmes finds himself unintentionally "tripping out" are effective enough to have remained in one's memories over decades. It takes a hefty slice of audience goodwill, however, to accept that the chief suspect hasn't spotted Holmes following him across the lonely moorlands when the sequences of Holmes's pursuit have shown him striking along unconcealed only a few yards behind!moreless
