  • What is the connection between the "League Of Red-Headed Men" and a bank robbery?

The preposterous wit and cleverness of Conan Doyle's classic story is somewhat diluted in this slightly awkward and prosaic adaptation - the version offered by the more famous Jeremy Brett series of twenty years later managed it far more stylishly. Padding the plot out to the requirements of a fifty-minute television drama gave both adaptations a problem, solved in the 1980s by the ingenious notion of bringing in Professor Moriarty. Here, we are simply informed that the mysterious "John Clay" is an old enemy of Holmes's who has been involved in many successful capers around Victorian London. As the unfortunate pawnbroker, Toke Townley is not quite right - the pomposity the character should have is largely missing.moreless
