The very last Sherlock Holmes story to be published is the basis for this episode. One of the things that modern readers find fascinating about Doyle's stories is that they contain prototypical situations for detective fiction - ideas and devices endlessly copied since, but, in Doyle's original, fresh and clever; we find ourselves witnessing the beginnings of a literary form. "The Retired Colourman", faithfully adapted for this TV segment, offers us rivalry among sleuths and also a character who would become very familiar, the dubious client. As the mean-spirited Mr. Amberley, guest star Maurice Denham presents a fine portrait of husbandly vindictiveness, and the important problem is not "Where is the wife?", but "Why was Holmes hired in the first place?"moreless
