    • NOTES (1)

      • The story is based on "The Adventure of the Dying Detective" (published Nov. 1887) in which Holmes used the same trick to fool Mr.Culverton Smith of Sumatra, "not a medical man, but a planter" -- and a murderer.

    • ALLUSIONS (1)

      • Lestrade: "Unless you'd rather have me call Arthur Doyle..."
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was the author of the original Sherlock Holmes stories. Also, later in the episode, Holmes uses this name as an alias-masquerading as a doctor. Doyle, in fact, was a medical doctor, which accounts for the very precise explanations of injuries in the original stories.
