Shiki (Japanese for corpse demon) is a Japanese-style animated ("anime") series based on the eponymous horror novel by Japanese novelist Fuyumi Ono. Shiki is set in Sotoba, a small, docile village during a sweltering summer. The village begins to experience a number of mysterious deaths that coincide with the moving in of an unusual family into the Kanemasa mansion. Toshio Ozaki, a doctor at the only hospital in the village, begins to believe that an unexplained plague has descended upon the city. As he continues to investigate, however, he begins to suspect that the deaths are the result of zombies and undead creatures roaming the city at night. The story begins to follow Natsuno Yuuki, a young villager who is being followed by death throughout the village. The anime adaptation began broadcasting in July 2010 in Japan, and was simulcast through FUNimation on their online video website for North American markets.
