Stories of detectives dealing with petty crimes rather than murders and the like usually featured in such shows. Side Street succeeded The Collaborators as the CBC's main series drama. The Collaborators had moved away from its original premise based on the combined work of police and forensic scientists to become a more conventional cop show. Program developers John Saxton and Geoffrey Gilbert aimed to move Side Street away from the violence of the typical police show with protagonists who were community service officers instead of ordinary detectives. They aimed to concentrate on issues such as blockbusting, strikebreaking, rape, poverty, and the problems of the elderly in the city, instead of major crimes.
