This is a fun episode, in which the brothers get pulled into working on an insurance case with Whittaker, a female investigator they are not eager to cooperate with again. It's nice to see the uneasy relationship both brothers have with Whittaker (which is more than justified by the way she plays them throughout), but I absolutely hate the fact that AJ gives in to her feminine wiles at the end of the episode.

Marlowe shines in the episode, both through his work as a "painter" and the way that he goes through his repertoire of tricks when Rick tries to send him off for help.

Continuities/discontinuities between this episode and the on-going series:

Rick reveals that he has made a down payment on a boat. So what about the boat we saw him living in earlier this season?

    Back story revelations:

When Whittaker and the Simons ad worked together on a previous case, she double-crossed them (although they were paid for it). AJ and Whittaker had been romantically involved, but he no longer thought of her kindly, probably because of the double-cross.

    Miscellaneous points:

The restaurant in the episode, Le Chien Andalou, was also in "Earth to We also briefly see an envelope from the Wheeler Corporation, so maybe Stacey has sent another check to replace the one that bounced.

The picnic scene begins with an establishing shot taken in Balboa Park.

When the Simons threaten to kill Whittaker, the only reaction of the SWAT team member standing nearby is to take his hat off.

How does AJ know that the criminal missed the 7:15 flight?

Rick: (observing AJ rubbing a pencil on a notepad to see what impressions have been left behind) Come on man, Charlie Chan did that in like, 1935 or something!

AJ: Well, it just so happens Charlie Chan was a very fine detective. In fact, you could watch that show more often. You might have learned something. (Continues rubbing) Aha, aha!

    Rick: Aha what?

AJ: Aha, I got a phone number, aha. (Silence)

    Rick: What?

    AJ: It's our number.

Rick (with a Charlie Chan accent): Oh, you very clever detective, you are! You such a smart man!
