  • Someone told me it's all happening at the zoo

    9.5
This is a fun episode with some laugh-out-loud scenes. I really like Rick driving the zoo tram through the downtown streets, and realizing that, since it's impossible to be unobstrusive in that vehicle, the best thing that he can do is use the loudspeaker to pretend this is a publicity stunt to bring more visitors. I also like how Cecelia doesn't even ask what's going on when Rick hauls AJ up the stairs, and how she handles the cop who comes to her front door to ask about the tram parked in front of her house the next morning. The final scene, in which the brothers pay Myron for his share of work on the case is great too. But the top scene of all is when AJ is hit by a tranquilizer dart, and regresses to childhood, and Rick has to somehow get his brother and his wobbly legs through the big cat house and out of the zoo. Rick: Shut up! That is not a dog. Now if we're both real quiet, maybe he'll only eat one of us.

Derek Frye hired the Simons because he thought they'd want the money so badly that they'd go along with his plans to blame the zoo employee's death on drug use. When they refuse to do that, he fires them. Fortunately, for once they finally do get paid for a job, as the zoo rewards them for bringing down Frye and his plot. There is real horror in the scene in which the contents of Frye's trophy room is revealed.

Continuities/discontinuities between this episode and the on-going series:

After the previous episode used the credit sequence and theme song that held for all seasons from #2 to the end (albeit with occasional revisions), this one returns to the first season opening sequence. I have no idea if this is how it was handled when first broadcast, or if that's something that was done later.

    Back story revelations:

Rick and AJ were both in Boy Scouts.

    Miscellaneous points:

Darleen Carr makes the first of four series appearances in this episode. In 1992, she and Jameson Parker married, and remain married today.

I don't know if this episode was actually filmed at the San Diego Zoo. I rather suspect not, since the zoo didn't want any connection to plot of stealing zoo animals for the purpose of "hunting" them.

Rick and AJ have dinner with their mother every Sunday. If she invites them on another day, they know she has a boyfriend she wants them to meet.

Rick indicates that AJ regressed about sixteen years when he was drugged. Evidently, their father was still around/alive at that time.

Frye lives on an estate with masonry walls and a gate. We will see this entrance again in later episodes.

Rick is a good shoulder to cry on, as he will continue to demonstrate throughout the series.

Derek Frye: Perhaps there was a personal problem. Drugs, drinking, anything that can explain how it happened, if you understand my meaning.

Rick: Yeah, yeah, I think so. Can I just ask you, though, do you have any preference? Drug abuse, alcoholism, animal husbandry?

  • Memorable funny scene!

    8.5
I love this episode mainly for one funny scene. When AJ gets shot with a tranqulizer that makes him go all goofy and funny. Rick has to lift him up and carry him out of the animal cages when they just happen to be snooping around. Love the banter between them about their past as children during that time as well. So funny. Oh, and by the way I love both the brothers but Rick is without a doubt my fav. Love the actor who played him Gerald to this day. You should check some of his acting in other shows like Designing Women, Major Dad, and a number of films. He's even in the new The A-Team film. :)moreless
  • The very first Simon & Simon I ever watched...

    8.1
As my summary states, this is the first episode I've ever watched. I caught it on TVLand, and now I seem to be hooked. I loved how A.J. got all the girls and the hard work while Rick had to do all the dirty work at the zoo. This was definately a good episode, and I can't wait to watch more from this series! My mom thinks it's funny that I've never seen it, but everyone knows I can't turn away from a good detective story! This one's a keeper!moreless
