Episode Summary

EDIT
Terry McDaniels is using a trapdoor to access the bank's computer system and funnel money out, leading vice-manager Paul Scully to hire the Simon brothers to find out how he is doing, claiming to have the boy's best interests at heart. Although A.J. accepts Scully at face value, Rick is convinced that Scully isn't everything that he seems.moreless

Again, this is a good episode. I liked how Rick manages to bond with Terry, as someone who also got in trouble as a boy. There is a nice scene between AJ and Rick when Rick gets out of the water after taking the plunge. The character of Cecilia is given the single note of haranguing her sons for being private eyes, rather than working jobs that she can brag about to her friends.

Clearly, the brothers are not making full use of Marlowe's skills, because he immediately susses out that Scully is a bad guy. Once again, the brothers will not be getting paid for the job, which is enough to convince Rick to take a bit of revenge on Scully (and leads to upright AJ suggesting that maybe Terry could use the computer to transfer some money into their account).

One could argue that it's overly convenient that Rick has just gotten a parabolic microphone for the business, since that's exactly the tool they need at the end of the episode, but at least it establishes what will be an ongoing bitRick keeps buying equipment that AJ tells him they don't need and can't afford.

    Miscellaneous points:

We are given more information about the office locations in this episode; both are in Westside Mall. I don't know whether such a mall once existed in San Diego, but there doesn't seem to be one now. The Simon & Simon office is at 222 Mission Laguna, and Peerless Detectives office is at 221. I can't find any evidence that there is currently a street by that name.

While San Diego does indeed have the remains of coastal World War II batteries, Battery Osgood (we see the name briefly) is actually in San Pedro.

Evidently the brothers regularly have dinner at their mother's home.

Myron: That hooligan bothering you again?

Janet: He doesn't bother me, Daddy.
