Episode Summary

EDIT
Franky
AIRED:
Franky just wants to fit in like any teenager. But she's been adopted by two dads, dresses like a boy, and was previously bullied, so she has to try a lot harder than others when she moves to Bristol halfway through the first semester.

  • Differs quite a bit from the previous 4 seasons.

    8.0
This episode is oddly different than what we have seen. For one, the storyline behind the character is stronger - a lot more about Franky is divulged than probably any other character in their first appearance episode. Secondly, the lack of swearing and sexuality is frank when you compare it to other season premieres/episodes in general. I was a bit surprised at how TAME this episode was. Tame it was, it came off as just another teen drama to me and we have several here from US/Can. But, the episode still shone through in a traditional SKINS way. The character of Franky definitely entices audiences - she's odd, but has a bad history of bullying (which is different than any other character has had). Franky has two dads, was adopted, starts her year at the high school late; in all, an interesting character. First time I think we've also seen a gun ever. Clearly the people behind the scenes are aiming for a completely DIFFERENT set of storylines, a completely different set of characters - so this season will definitely be different than the previous 4.moreless
  • Welcome to Bristol, Franky!

    7.0
It wasn't amazing. It was quite good. The acting was average in most cases, the characters only half likable. The music was really good.

Franky - an interesting character at least. There was something I didn't like about her, can't put my finger on it. I liked how she stood up to Mini, and wasn't just the shy new girl. Plus it was good to see she didn't become an outsider. She's obviously fragile, as seen with the whole gun scene. Mini - the horrible one of the series, she was quite funny in places. Extremely jealous, which should be interesting to see developed. Hopefully, she'll get what she deserves sometimes.

Liv and Grace - Liv wasn't seen much, seems ok. Grace was funny and probably my favourite character here.

Alo and Rich - I liked them. Surprisingly enough, they were quite funny.

Nick and Matty - Nick's quite hot. Matty was really kind of creepy, and his scene with Franky made little sense.

This wasn't what I've come to expect from Skins. Get better please...moreless
  • They just don't do first episodes well. Shows promise.

    8.0
They've never really done first episodes spectacularly well. From Skins experience I found that most of the time the first episode of each season is usually the least impressive but if Franky is the start of a new era then I'm full of hope. The episode had it's flaws and jerky dialogue from the young actors; the story wasn't the most imaginative one ever concieved but that's nothing to sniff at. But overall I felt it was fresh. Which is good. I felt that Rich and Alo definitely interested me the most, but it was Mini who shone with promise. She isn't perfect as an actress but I reckon she's going to grow with her skills and her character will benefit too hopefully with some nice writing.

I feel that Skins is finally settling into it's own now it has finally broken ties with the preceding seasons. This bunch of characters are completely new, there's no Effy to maintain a level of continuity and pull people in this time. I think this is a brilliant new beginning for the show. It's, as I've said, fresh but it's also slightly nostalgic with a whiff of the first season hanging about it. Let's hope they continue to impress and entertain us. I think this series of Skins has the potential to be even greater than it's predecessors.moreless
  • My opinion so far: keep it this way!

    9.0
Great fifth season premiere. As Skins' habit we have a whole group of new characters every two years, and this time we start with a very complicated and twisted girl, Franky.

I was really impressed by the episode. I have noticed that in this tv show there are a lot of ups and downs, but Franky definitely pointed high for the season premiere. Amazing episode, delicate, introspective, bittersweet and tender. The other characters that I have seen so far seem to be interesting, even if not every single one of them.. yet . We'll see, it is premature to judge. For now I can say that this new season is like a fresh air breeze from the darkness of the previous seasons. Beside the first one in fact, I think that things went out of hands for a while, even if once in a while there have been amazing episodes that reminded you the greatness of the show.moreless
  • A new cast. Has Skins finally grown up?

    9.0
    Wow. Just wow.

Okay guys... let's face it. In 2007 along came a show that while it was at many times ridiculous it was still very good. It tackeled dark and gritty storylines while also being very funny and allowed a great host of young actors to get their foot in the door. Then series 2 came along and it was darker, less focusing on the comedy and more on the drama. Though still very enjoyable it never reached the heights of the first series. Then, the decision was made to recast the entire main cast, a bold one but one that made sense. Skins was a show about sixth form after all. It wouldn't make sense to follow the origonal gang to Uni. Series 3 introduced a new cast, and unfortunately the show started to slide downhill. While still enjoyable, it was hard to warm to the charactor of Cook, or Effy, who was a bit of a cow all the way through it. And then when series 4 came along... blimey. Let's just say... I wasn't that excited for series 5. It was so immensly dark it was like watching the cast of Eastenders on speed for the amount of misery it depicted. The ending for this set of charactors was dissapointing; they went far too far killing off Freddie like that and ultimately I felt Skins had lost its sparkle. It was quite reluctantly I tuned into meet the new cast. And like I said up the top... wow.

It's like stepping back in time. I immediately love the new protagonist Franky, played so well by Dakota Blue-Richards (who was a breath of fresh air in the otherwise very dissapointing Golden Compass). She's goofy and just dosen't fit.. and was bullied to hell in her last school. Unlike Effy, who was a complete mess and only ever hurt others around her, Franky is very likable and I felt so sorry for her. I really wanted her to make some friends, and thankfully the episode ended on a high note and she did.

We also met the rest of the gang as well. Mini is a world class cow, although saying that I recon they'll be some underlying reason why this is so. Her boyfriend Nicky seems to bend to her every whim, yet it seems at least her two friends, Beth and (I'm sorry forgotten her name... lol) sense her true colors. The two van drivers seem like they'll be good comic relief, though I imagine we'll be seeing a whole new side to them... and Franky's gun friend seems very intriguing. He'll probably be getting closer to her in the coming weeks.

It was not just the new gang that I really liked. They seem to have toned down the drug taking and the drinking; this got a little out of hand in the other series and I'm glad they are focusing on charactor more than portraying all teenagers as druggies and alcoholics. All in all... it was hugley enjoyable and I'm now very excited for the rest of the series. A great breath of fresh air after the mostly dissapointing series 4. If they keep this up, series 5 may well recapture what made series 1 so special. Bravo guys. Bring it on.moreless
