  • It's only the first episode and it's this good?

Sakuragi is your normal high school delinquent that looks like Kuwabara from Yu Yu Hakusho, and is pretty tall. He gets dumped for like the hundreth time by a girl who likes some guy on the basketball team. After beating up everyone who says a word that sounds like basket, he encounters a girl named Haruko that loves basketball. Because he's so tall, she asks him if he's considering basketball. Sakuragi immediately does push ups to bulk up, and somehow finds himself on the third year student's floor. He gets in a fight with some people there, and meets Haruko. They go to the gym, and Haruko explains some things about basketball to Sakuragi. She tells him about the dunk. Sakuragi tries doing one, but gets hurt. He asks her if she has any boyfriends, and it seems she's interested in one. Later on, the third year students visit Sakuragi's classroom, telling him to meet them after school. When the thir year students meet at the top, they find Rukuwa, as tall as Sakuragi, there, and get beat up.

As a huge basketball fan, this episode is awesome. Well, not that awesome, but everything is just a real treat. At first I didn't expect much of Slam Dunk since it's pretty old, but I realized who was animating it; Toei. They can make any shounen look awesome. The opening scene with Sakuragi playing basketball, gives a pretty great preview of what we can expect basketball wise from this anime series. Aside from basketball, this episode was surprisingly impressive. Somehow, I already feel attached to the characters. Maybe it has to do with the fact that Yu Yu Hakusho is my favourite anime, and incidentally, Sakuragi looks like Kuwabara, or maybe it's because I'm biased since this is a basketball anime. Whatever it is, the characters are really great so far, especially Sakuragi. What I like the most about old animes, such as this, is that the characters are much more likeable. I've noticed this with Maison Ikkoku as well. Even though in one point of view, the episode may feel like it rushed things, but the fact that the characters are immediately molded into your preferences makes this a great introduction to this classic anime.moreless
