    An insect obsessed teen becomes infected by his metor laced bug collection and goes all fatal attraction on Lana Lang. Which in turn sets the tone for the rest of the season and most of the series as well. I really liked this episode, although the ick factor was somewhat high what with Bug Boy molting, coccooning and consuming his mother and then attempting to cocoon and consumate his relationship with Lana. Of all the meteor freak episodes in the the first season this was one of the better ones but I thought it was somewhat funny and ironic that the young actor playing the bug boy assailant bore a striking resemblance to Christian Bale in the Batman movies!moreless

  • A loner bug collector with an obsession over Lana, crashes his car and is bitten by his various mutated insects, giving him bug-like powers. Meanwhile, Lex is curious about the effect that Lana's Kryptonite necklace has over Clark. Decent second episode..moreless

    Although a few dodgy and sloppily-handled elements, the Pilot served as a great opener to 'Smallville'. So I was glad to see that the high quality continued for this second episode.

    After the Pilot didn't have any real opening sequence, it is with this episode that we get to hear Remy Zero's great theme song for the first time (although the first time I saw this ep it wasn't played as I've already commented on my review for the Pilot episode, the Pilot (which had no opening credits sequence) and this episode were shown together here in feature-length format when the series debuted here in the U.K. on New Year's Eve 2001).

    Things are undoubtedly well acted, and I really buy into the characters. As with the Pilot, I still can't really warm to Chloe or Pete, but they weren't featured in this episode enough for it really to be a problem.

    Things do verge a bit too much on being a "good looking teen drama" for my own personal stage; I would have much preferred to have seen more time given over to developing "bug boy" Greg. That said, the "guest mutant character" of this episode is much more interesting that the sloppily handled (and somewhat tacked on) one in the Pilot. I just feel that, once again, much more could have been done with Greg.

    The possible Clark / Lana relationship strays far too much into standard, aforementioned "teen drama" territory for me (though it is played out very well for what it is), but I do like the other running plot regarding Lex, and his curiosity over Clark's seeming powers, and the effect the Kryptonite necklace has on him, looking set to really hot up over the coming episodes.

    I've rated both the Pilot and 'Metamorphosis' with the same score, but for different reasons. The Pilot introduces the characters and the scenario well, but suffers from sloppy guest mutant handling. As a story, I generally like 'Metamorphosis' better; but the Pilot has the edge over it on other respects. As such, I give them both an even 9/10.moreless

  • Not quite as good as the Pilot, but it was still a superb episode. (Spoilers)

    This episode of Smallville was pretty good, but I didn't really get hooked on it as much as I did with the Pilot episode. Although it did have it's good moments, I just didn't really like the whole bug bad guy thing. I mean, they did a good job with it, but for some reason it just didn't really draw me into the episode. The character interaction, although, is still excellent, just as it was in the first episode. I'm still really enjoying the friendship between Clark and Lex. I'm also hoping to see some sparks fly between Clark and Lana soon, and overall, I give this episode, Metamorphosis, a 9 out of 10.moreless

    • When Greg crashes his Bug into a utility pole, the sound effects are that of a radiator hissing and the engine stalling. The engine to a VW bug is located in the back of the car, the front is merely a trunk of sorts. Edit
    • When Clark, Chloe, and Pete are investigating Greg's house, why is there steam coming from the bathroom? There was no water running in the shower and there were no sounds of any water running when they were in the bathroom. Edit
    • After Greg hits Clark with the pipe in the foundry, Clark's hands are very dirty. In the closeup on Clark's hand immediately after he lands, the hand is clean to show the effects of the kryptonite. Edit

Edit
    • Chad E Donella (Greg/"The Bug Guy") played another vaguely mentally disturbed mutant in an episode of The X-Files called "Hungry." His character's catchphrase, used several times, was, "You can't fight biology." In this episode of Smallville, Greg tells Clark, "You can't fight natural law." Edit

    • Metamorphosis/Kafka::
      The title of this episode comes from a short story by an Austrian philosopher named Franz Kafka. It is about a young man who inexplicably transforms into a large cockroach, and is then killed by his mother. Chloe even makes a comparison between Greg and Kafka after Clark explains about Greg's "Bug-Boy" condition. Edit
