    What is the point of the characters Leo, Karen's boyfriend and the director's boyfriend? They are distracting from the plot. In fact, there was one episode where there were scenes from the play and then there was a scene with two guys talking politics, and I thought I had accidentally hit my remote and changed the channel!

    They're there to make this a show about people and not just the dramallamas that happen behind the scenes on Broadway. They keep the characters from becoming flat.

    I think they help break up the "theater world" which helps make the show a little more watchable for people that aren't completely sold on the musical aspect of the show.
