  • NO UMA, BUT PLENTY OF OOMPH

    Smash: "Understudy" Was an Overachiever

Guest-star Uma Thurma didn't show up until the last few minutes, but this was still one of Smash's best episodes yet.

What the hell was this? You hire freaking Uma Thurman to play this movie star turned "Bombshell" leading lady on Broadway (which is a sign of a fading career lol, ok maybe just her agent having sex with "producer wannabe" Ellis lol) and make a huge fuss about it, you even build a promo around her and make us wait for an entire episode (which was fillery and kinda boring this time with all this sappy Julia lamenting, I seriously wanted to slap her) for her to show up and all we get is just a lousy 45 seconds at the end (it was a little bit epic, but still). They are desperate to get some better numbers, huh? And Ivy needs a wake up call, maybe a punch. And I seriously sense some Derek "attention" towards Karen again. Even stronger this time. I hate it. Knock it off, writers. So, no more fighting of Derek and her boyfriend who will evidently cheat on her with that annoying chick from work. 5/10moreless

Smash is still consistently good in my eyes, but the episodes prior to this were a bit better. We still got a few developments with Derek's possible crush on Karen, Tom being involved in a surprise love triangle, Eileen gets new investors, and Ivy schemes.

I could have used less of Debra Messing's character being upset over her divorce. I really didn't see why they focused on this so much considering she was the one who was unhappy in her marriage in the first place. Isn't this what she wanted?

The fight scene between Dev & Derek wasn't great, I hope this show doesn't get too focused on the love entanglements and focuses more of the characters as individual people.

Overall, good development, the Uma Thurman appearance didn't really help it or hurt it in my opinion, felt more of a lead in to next episode rather than part of this episode too me in my opinion. Solid episode of Smash.moreless
