  • George Smiley's gradual unravelling of the mystery takes him to Germany.

The perfection of Alec Guinness's performance lies in the eloquence with which he says nothing, the meaning he implies in small gestures, the emphasis he puts into seemingly banal words and looks. The quietness of his intensity is deceptive, the lasting effect of his understatement is overwhelming. The performance is a real acting masterclass. "Smiley's People", like "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy", surrounds him with a superb supporting cast who seem to take the keys to their own roles from his exceptional subtlety. The ruthlessness of this quiet man Smiley takes a while to make itself noticed, but Guinness ensures that we know how formidable and fearless he is.moreless

    • Esterhase: At a certain age, a man's got to be what he deserves. I spent fifteen years at the Circus, trying to be an English gentleman. You know what I am now? A cheap Austro-Hungarian in expensive clothes.

    • Smiley: That's the worry, you see. Cause and effect. Toby quarrels with Vladimir one day. Vladimir get shot with a Russian gun the next. In police terms that's what they call an embarrassing chain of events.

    • Smiley: You know why they call Karla 'The Sandman', don't you? He has a way of putting to sleep whoever comes too close to him.

    • Connie: (about Karla's mistress) He had her topped. One-way ticket to the Gulag.
      Smiley: What for?
Connie: Having doubts, going soft on the Revolution. His idea of a marital tiff.

    • Connie: Give it up, George, it's over. It's not a fighting war, not like in our day. It's grey. Half-devils versus half-angels. Nobody knows who the goodies are.
