  • This sequel to "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" finds George Smiley returning from retirement and finally achieving - but at great cost - a final victory over his KGB arch-enemy, Karla.

The huge success of "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" in 1979 made it inevitable that Alec Guinness would return as George Smiley in another John Le Carre adaptation - but instead of going to the next book in the series, "The Honourable Schoolboy", the BBC jumped to "Smiley's People", in which the veteran spymaster has a final confrontation with his ruthless Russian nemesis, Karla. Guinness was said by his biographer, Piers Paul Read, to be less satisfied with this sequel, mainly because it had a different director; but it is very nearly as dazzlingly good, every bit as impressively intricate, and with an equally fine cast. Guinness deservedly won a second BAFTA award as Smiley.
