  • Game, set and match - George Smiley gains his final and absolute revenge on the diabolical Karla. But is it worth it?

    10
The cigarette lighter given to George Smiley by his faithless wife so long ago proved to be the key to "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy", and now it reappears in the final moments of this sequel. Its full significance will be denied to those didn't see "Tinker, Tailor", but its impact for those who did is shattering. In trapping his arch-enemy, Smiley has had to find Karla's one weakness - the tiny streak of humanity hidden so far under his ruthless surface. In doing so, Smiley is only too aware that he has, after all, become like his enemy and no longer has the moral high ground. You won, someone tells him. Alec Guinness's delivery of the last line ("I... suppose I did") is perfect.moreless
