  • What did they expect from Texas?

    7.5
I have recently taken an interest in this show and I love DWTS, so that may have me a bit biased since the quality of dancing is so much higher.

BUT, I understand that SYTYCD is about finding and taking raw talent, and developing it along the way, hoping to find that diamond in the rough that can be turned into a sparkling star.

I really enjoyed the first episode and even some of the Utah auditions, but watching the dancers from Dallas was downright painful. I am from Dallas originally (by birth, not choice) and I can honestly say that the way some of those people behaved towards the judges makes me ashamed to say I'm from Texas (and glad I no longer live there).

You don't talk back to the person giving you constructive criticism. No matter what. You smile, you thank them for their time and then you leave. The first guy in Dallas, Brian whats-his-name, was a walking joke. He is just the kind of smug prig that epitomizes the way the rest of the world views a typical overly-macho Texan male. And the guy that mouthed off to Mary after doing that awful "chair dance"? Truly Delusional.

But then again, auditioning Beauty Pageant Barbies in Dallas was a bit deluded, wasn't it? What did they expect from a place like that. Dallas has about as much real culture as the fictional town of Hooterville. You want to shop and eat? Go to Dallas. You want to find world-class dancers there? Good luck, only the Dallas Black Dance Theater really offers anything. Otherwise, you need to get on a plane and get the heck out of Dodge.

I really hope the next few shows aren't as uncomfortable to watch!

ps. Mary needs to TONE it down. Her loud, mid-west mouthy personality can be VERY grating on the nerves. But I LOVE Mia. She has class and presence and I really respect her as an artist.moreless
  • one of my favorite shows but not my favorite episode.

    9.0
auditions continue in salt lake city, utah. wasn't super excited about anyone like i was/am about robert muraine from the la auditions. must give props to brett banford for coming out and auditioning even though he has downs syndrome. michael moore was also an interesting character. i feel like the judges were a little hard on him, more so than they needed to be. i would've like to see him do choreography. also, kelly barber, the choreographer's daughter, i thought did really well and am looking forward to her moving through the competition. the highlight of salt lake city for me was gev manoukian. not only did he come back after not making it through to vegas in season 2 (?), but he actually trained in contemporary and other styles before returning. he combined contemporary with breaking for his audition and was asked back for choreography. he ended up with a ticket to vegas. as for the dallas auditions, they didnt really feature that many of the good dancers. wasn't excited about anyone except maybe joshua allen who when through to choreography and ultimately got a ticket to vegas.moreless
