  • Wasn't this supposed to be a satire?

Towards the end of the season several story lines are brought to a close, but unfortunately the writer(s) forgot that the show is supposed to be a satire of a soap opera. Long scenes involving Jodie's dilemma and Burt's confession resemble straightforward soap scenes with the occasional laugh. What's worse, they're not very convincing as real emotional moments.

You wind up waiting for the hilarious court scenes in which Katherine Helmond shines as the ditzy Jessica. They're laugh-out-loud funny and show Miss Helmond to be the break-out star of the show. Remarkably, her own serious scene, in which she reconciles with Corinne, is the only one that actually succeeds in moving the viewer. Hats off to Miss Helmond, and she alone is responsible for my score of 8.5.
