Veteran explosives expert Sergeant Freddie Lewis supervises specialist battle training for "A" Company and five members from the Territorial Army. Meanwhile, his oldest friend Chick Henwood has fallen in love with Lewis' estranged wife Katherine. During the training weekend, Lewis shows disturbing signs of mental instability.
