South Park

Season 6 Episode 1

Jared Has Aides

Aired Wednesday 10:00 PM Mar 06, 2002 on Comedy Central

  • Trivia

    • There is a hidden visitor at the end of the theme song. The alien is in the crowd on the left side of the screen. All season 6 theme songs have this visitor actually.

    • Jared bares a striking resemblance to the manager of the copy shop in "SP: BLU."

    • Even though it's airing worldwide and never airs on Comedy Central, the episode appears on the Season 6 box set.

    • Comedy Central felt that Parker and Stone had gone too far with their treatment of Butters. In a rare bit of creative interference, the network told Parker and Stone that they were not allowed to do any episodes where Butters was physically abused by his parents and banned "Jared Has Aides" from being shown on their network ever again.

    • The worker tells Jared that the boys have a sandwich they'd like him to sign, but the boys bring no sandwich.

    • The boys walk up to Mr. Garrison without any of them seeming to recognize him.

    • Cartman now takes over for Kenny in the perversion department — he mentions jacking off twice in this episode, and he's already jacked off a dog back in "Proper Condom Use." But then, he should have been a natural for that since the beginning. His mom's a crack whore, after all.

    • When Jared and his date are dining, the vase and rose should have turned 180 degrees with every change in camera angle, but instead, they move very little while the background switches 180 degrees.

    • The boys made $15 for a commercial they never made - they got paid for their effort.

    • At Kenny McCormick Town Square, when Jared was coming
to South Park, Mr. Garrison failed to recognize Stan, Kyle,
      Cartman and Butters.

  • Quotes

    • Stan: Only in America can someone become famous just because they go from being a big fat ass to not being a big fat ass.

    • Jared Vogle: And so, with all the money I've made from commercials. I have decided to start the Aides For Everyone Foundation!
      Man: What?!
Jared Vogle: I'll personally see to it that each and every one of you get aides.

    • Chef: Stay back children! Jared wants to give you AIDS!

    • (Butters is fat, and is exercising on a rowing machine.)
Cartman: (Yelling at Butters) You are such a flabby hunk of crap! Look at those jelly rolls! Jelly rolls, I tell ya! You still got seven chins, boy! You'll never be thin! Nobody loves you!
Butters: Uh, hey now. They do too. My mom and dad love me even if I am fat.
Cartman: Butters, I'm just trying to offer some motivational help here.
      Butters: Uh, all right then.
Carman: (Yelling again) Row, you fat bitch! Look at them jelly rolls! Nobody loves you! You're not even a person!

    • Cartman: Aw come on; think of how famous you'll be.
Butters: Hmm… you mean like Jared?
Kyle: Yeah dude, you'll be just like Jared!
Butters: W-well the heck with that, you said Jared was a penis-butt.

    • Butters: You guys have already gotten me in Dutch for getting fat. And then I got in double Dutch for having liposuction. And now you're asking me to get in triple Dutch? Nuh-uh. I'll never be that Dutch.

    • Jared Vogle: I got aides about two years ago and I've been losing weight ever since. It's amazing how slim you can get with aides.
Stan: [thinking he has AIDS] I'll bet you can.

    • Chris: Butters. Are you having liposuction surgery? Tell me the truth!
      Butters: Yes, sir.
Linda: This is unbelievable! How many times have we told you not to have self-performed liposuction surgery in our house?
      Butters: Four times, mom.

    • (phone conversation)
Linda: Butters, your father called and said you made him very upset!
Cartman: (impersonating Butters) Yeah, well, Dad's being a little pussy, Mom.
Linda: Butters, where did you get that kind of smart mouth?
Cartman: (impersonating Butters) Uh, not from you dumb asses, that's for sure.
Linda: Oh! Just wait till I get home, mister!
Cartman: (impersonating Butters) Well, I'll be waiting with horse bells on, you old… horse-bangin' skank.

    • [the town looks for Jared]
Mr. Garrison: There he is, beatin' that dead horse!

    • (phone conversation)
Chris: Do I hear the television? We told you no television while you're grounded!
Cartman: (impersonating Butters) Oh, gee whiz, I'm not, uh, watchin' television, Dad, I'm just layin' around jackin' it.
      Chris: Jacking it? Jacking what?
Cartman: (impersonating Butters) Well my hot spicy boner, of course, Dad.
Chris: What?! Are you trying to get yourself into more trouble with that kind of language?!
Cartman: (impersonating Butters) Ah, loosen up, you bloody vaginal belch.
Cartman: (impersonating Butters) Bring it on, queerbate.

    • Jared Vogle: I'm gonna seek out all the underprivileged and hungry children of the world, and I'm giong to give them aides myself!
Chef: You're going to give children AIDS?
Jared Vogle: Yes, it is my hope that every beautiful child on this earth has aides by next month! Aides for everyone! [pause]
      Skeeter: Get him!

    • Cartman: Dammit Butters! Keep eating or I'll kick your ass 'til you're deader than Kenny!
Stan: Dude that isn't cool, you shouldn't joke about Kenny being dead. Enough time hasn't passed.
Cartman: So how long do we have to wait to joke about it?
Kyle: 22.3 years. That's how long it takes for something tragic to become funny.
Cartman: Oof, that's a long time to wait!

    • [they discuss how Butters could gain 50 pounds]
Chef: Well, if you want him to get really fat as fast as possible, one of you will have to marry him.
      Stan: Marry him?
Chef: It definitely worked for every woman I ever met.

    • Cartman: Oh my god. You guys, I think I'm having a genius moment. Yes…yes…it's coming to me now.
      Kyle: Thats...that's diarrhea.

    • Butters: Hi, Mom and Dad!
Chris: Don't you "Hi, Mom and Dad!" us, you little punk! (punches him)
      Butters: Ow. Dad?
Linda: You don't even know the trouble you're in, mister! (punches him)
Butters: Ah! What did I do? What did I do?
Chris: You think you're tough now? Answer me! (the beating continues; Butters starts crying)
Cartman: (outside; listening) Aw, man, if I was older, I would totally start jacking off right now.

  • Notes

    • On the DVD commentary for this episode, Trey Parker & Matt Stone said they got a letter from Subway about this episode. They claimed the letter said "...Unfortunately, Subway can't control the content on all TV shows..."

    • This episode has rarely appeared on Comedy Central. According to one report, the channel forbade ever showing it after its initial week, because of the scene at the end where Butters was heard being beaten by his parents. CC is also believed to have forbidden any other episodes with Butters being physically abused by his family. Despite the CC ban, this episode has been shown in syndication and worldwide. It recently aired on Comedy Central on Wednesday, June 17, 2009, on the 12:30 A.M. slot.

    • Though Sky banned it on first showing in the UK, when the series debuted on terrestrial television (Channel 4) they showed this episode at the start.

    • First appearance of City Wok guy.

    • This episode was banned by Sky in the UK and instead of opening the series with it, Sky went forward to "Asspen".

    • This episode debuted the new opening credit sequence.

  • Allusions

    • A Christmas Story
When Butter's dad says "Don't you look at me like that young man, you're gonna get it!" It is the exact delivery and tone that Ralphie's dad uses when he punishes his son in A Christmas Story.

    • Cartman: Then eat your puke.
      Butters: No!
Cartman: Oh, come on, Japanese girls do it!

Reference to a video that went around the Internet several times (I remember seeing it in 2000) that showed a Japanese girl putting her finger down her throat, throwing up into a bowl, and then eating it. It's one of the most disgusting bits of "underground video" that you'll ever see.

    • Philadelphia:

The part of the episode where Jared gets fired and is walking along the street, and even the song used in the background ("Streets of Philadelphia" by Bruce Springsteen) parodies the 1993 film Philadelphia starring Tom Hanks as a lawyer who gets fired from his firm because he has AIDS.
