Episode Summary

EDIT
It's Halloween in South Park again, and all is not well. Father Maxi denounces the holiday as evil, and expresses his disgust in inviting the band Korn to perform, which could only compound the evil that day. Korn and the rest of South Park start seeing pirate ghosts (or are they ghost pirates?) around the pier, making the concert a distinct impossibility. With the help of their space chicken friend, Niblet, Korn set's out to foil the ghosts evil scheme.moreless

  • A nearly flawless episode

    9.0
Not only is this episode a fun Halloween devoted chapter, but is also a spoof of old Scooby Doo cartoons and does it all perfectly. Guest stars Korn represent the Scooby Gang as they enter South Park for a concert, and everything from their dialogue to the animation of their characters is perfect parody.

There is so much that is 'right' with this episode that it is difficult to review it. Everything from the witty one-liners (Stan's slam at the local easy listening radiostation booth), the spoofs (Kenny's costume) and signature character jokes (the crowds instant transformation into "lynch mob", Cartman's lack of sensitivity) are all perfectly delivered. I laughed throughout the entire episode. One of my favourites!

And the crude cemetery watchmen were hilarious!moreless
  • A great episode with my favorite rock band and parody of Scooby-Doo

    9.0
The boys meet metal band Korn to solve a mystery of who's screwing up Halloween in South Park. This is a well written funny episode making fun of Scooby-Doo and putting up Korn in there. In fact, they even perform "Falling Away From Me" to end the episode, which I feel made the ep very structured and worth watching.
  • A periody of Scooby-Doo,in the form of a rock band...hmmmmm... totally lol gotta watch tho.=p

    9.0
The boys are having trouble with the 5th graders on halloween,so they attempt to dig up kyles dead grandma in order to scare them...Meanwhile the hard rock band...Corn are scadualed to play in south park but they run into some pirate ghosts... its a Scooby-Doo periody that will make you laugh your socks off. They find that Kyles granny has been dug up.And the 5th graders threaten to scare them on halloween.Kenny enters a halloween costume with a totally awsome costume...a robot. But he loses lol to wendy who is dress in a really fake Chubacca costume that you can tell has been drawn. =p c ya, South_Parker!moreless
  • Different styles of animation are always welcome on South Park. Not because the animation sucks otherwise, but because playing with the nature of the animation has always been a large part of South Park.moreless

    9.1
Different styles of animation are always welcome on South Park. Not because the animation sucks otherwise, but because playing with the nature of the animation has always been a large part of South Park.

That being said, it was incredibly rewarding to see the boys of South Park meet the boys of the mystery-solving band Korn, animated to look like the mystery-solving teens on Scooby-Doo. The episode was at times transformed into a Scooby-Doo episode, to hilarious results.

They also play on some of the other Scooby-Doo conventions, such as the lame dialogue, lame disguises, and lame chase scenes.

In all, this groovy Pirate Ghost Mystery is a success.moreless
  • Korn comes to South Park to promote the new Halloween party. Pirate ghosts soon invade the town.

    8.6
I didn't particularly like this episode and I much ratehr preferred the past 2 Halloween specials. Korn comes to South Park but on the way there they see Pirate Ghosts. They go to South Park anyhow and attempt to get rid of the ghosts which turn out to not really be ghosts at all! It is just Father Maxi who is upset about the evil nature of Halloween. He was using shadows to make ghosts. I thought this episode was a filler episode because I really did not particularly like it. But oh well, a true fan should watch it, just to gain an opinion.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (17)

    • This is the first time the 5th Graders have speaking roles since the unaired pilot.

    • Mr. Garrison says "Nothing wrong has ever happened in the town until Korn showed up." He is clearly wrong, since something goes wrong in every episode. This proves how stupid the town's adults are.

    • During the scene when Korn meets Priest Maxi as he's hammering in a Halloween is Anti-God sign a chunk of his led is missing.

    • When the group splits up, Munky originally joins the group on the left, but is later seen with the other group.

    • A person in a transformed Leonard Maltin (from the "Mecha-Streisand" episode) costume can be seen walking around the docks in one scene.

    • At the graveyard, one of the tombstones is marked "Kenny - 1999".

    • Eric tells his mom that she only has 72 more shopping days until Christmas but if it's Halloween then Christmas is in 55 days and 72 days later would be January 11th.

    • Once again, Wendy wins the costume contest for her Chewbacca costume. She had used the same costume in "Pink Eye," and had won the contest then as well.

    • There have been three Halloweens, yet they're still in third grade.

    • Cartman describes the 'warm' innards of the body as feeling like 'cold' spaghetti.

    • After seeing the dog vomit her mother's dead body, why would Sheila then let Stan and Kyle shove a stick up its ass and use it as a puppet? Even if they reburied the body immediately afterwards, there wouldn't have been enough time to properly bury it AND have Stan and Kyle unbury it again to use.

    • Kenny's suit contd... even if it was from Bill Cosby and the future, that doesn't mean Kenny can get it. The reason he has it is because it's funny, it's suppose to contradict the fact that he's poor and maybe imply that he spent a lot on Halloween and then the kids don't care at all.

    • The dug-up grandma would not have the last name Broflovski. Since she is Sheila's mother, her last name should be whatever Sheila's maiden name is.

    • When Korn and the kids were deciding who should go with who, three members of Korn go with Kyle and Stan and two members go with Cartmen and Kenny. But later, when they were looking around, two members were with Kyle and Stan and three members were with Cartmen and Kenny.

    • To the ghost-caused injury goofs: I think that was a dig at Scooby-Doo - it's not meant to make sense, what the gang says is the solution, no questions asked (then again, I could be just as wrong as the next guy)

    • Kenny's costume goof: Kenny was given the costume by someone who came back from the future in which Cartman's trapper keeper takes over the world - in trapper keeper, the humans make robots to try to destroy trapper keeper that look exactly like kenny's costume. goof solved.

    • Although the above is most likely a goof it is possible that sheila and gerald shared the same surname before marriage. It could be the Jewish equivilent of a Smith marrying a Smith.

  • QUOTES (18)

    • Liane: Eric's not fat. He's just big boned.
Kyle: Well he must have a huge bone up his ass, then!

    • Mr. Garrison: Nothing ever went wrong in this town before that evil Korn band showed up.
Sharon Marsh: Well I say we go find them and kick their devil-worshipping butts out of town!

    • Cartman: Maybe we should shove a stick up her ass and use her as a puppet. Ooooooooh! Scaaarry Grraaanddmma!
Kyle: Alright Cartman, that does it! That's my Grandma, you show her some Goddamn respect!

    • Father Maxi: Halloween is an abomination of God, a celebration of the occult!

    • Uncle Jimbo: C'mon Ned, this isn't a whorehouse; it's a horROR house.

    • (Guys from graveyard at town meeting.)
Guy #1: We're here to inform you that someone has been stealing bodies from the local graveyard, most likely to have sex with them. Here's what having sex with a dead body might look like. (guy #2 holds up a large card.)
      Crowd: EWW!
Guy #1: And here's what having sex with a dead body might sound like. (Guy #2 proceeds to open a jar of mayonnaise and repeatedly ram his fist into it, causing a sick slurping sound)
      Crowd: UGH!
Person in crowd: Excuse me, how is this helping?

    • (The kids are plotting to scare the 5th graders with a dead body.)
Cartman: Then where the hell are we gonna get a dead body?
Stan: We're gonna dig up Kyle's dead gramma!
Kyle: Yeah fat ass, we're gonna dig up…DIG UP KYLE'S DEAD GRAMMA?!

    • Cartman: (to Nibblet) Ahh! You goddamn chicken from outer space! (He chases Nibblet as Nibblet flies away.)

    • Cartman: Oh sweet. The "Life-Sized Blow-up Antonio Banderas Love Doll." What a cool Christmas present.

    • Cartman: (reading box) 'Life-sized Antonio Banderas Blow Up Love Doll;' comes with realistic gen-e-tilia.

    • Jonathan: It's simple. Priest Maxi didn't want there to be a Halloween, so he decided to scare everyone away from the docks.
David: Yeah. And then he used this flashlight and some cotton swabs to create the ghosts. (shows the flashlight and swabs, then shines the light through the swabs. The pirate ghosts appear in the distance)
Fieldy: (with some cheese and a cup)Then all he needed was some sound effects created by this cup and a piece of cheese. (holds them to his mouth and sounds) Aaaaraargh!
Jonathan: And all he had to do then was create a ghost ship, by using some candles, a mirror, and two squirrels. (genuflects to place the candle between the mirror and the squirrels. A pirate ship appears on the lake)
Chef: Father, why did you go to all this trouble?
Fr. Maxi: Because Halloween is an abomination of God. I would do anything to stop this wretched, unholy holiday!
Chef: Including killing people and wreaking havoc all over South Park?
Brunet: Don't you see that by trying to stop Halloween you've scared the hell out of everybody?
      Fr. Maxi: No.

    • Jonathan Davis: Me and the gang learned a lot and we hope you did too. You all perceived us to be mean, evil people but really we're just normal guys. And we all perceived pirate ghosts to be real when actually they were just cotton swabs. So I guess the lesson is it's easy to perceive something one way and then be wrong. So we all need to learn to be a little less perceptive.

    • (Korn catches the pirate ghosts in a net.)
Jonathan Davis: Now let's see who these pirate ghosts really are.
      (The pirate ghosts disappear.)
Jonathan Davis: Oh I guess they really were pirate ghosts.

    • Randy: Here's Korn's van!
Lady in mob: Let's flip it over!
Officer Barbrady: Okay people, let's try to stay orderly. The best way to do this is to all get on one side and push from the top.

    • DJ: Well here's some kids enjoying the Halloween haunt now. Hey boys, what do you think of cozy FM's Halloween haunt so far?
Stan: This one time, like eight months ago, I saw two guys kissing in a park. And that was the gayest thing I'd ever seen until I saw the cozy FM Halloween haunt.

    • Kenny: What the hell? What the f--k is this?
(Mumbling as two more speeders fly by and bomb him to bits; then the rats converge on him.)

    • Voice: Hi Kyle.
      Kyle: (hops back) Aaaah!
Cartman: (who's providing the voice) Have you been a good boy, Kyle? Have you been making Grandma proud?
Kyle: Dammit Cartman! That's not funny!
Stan: (chuckling) Eh, eh! Yes it is.
      Cartman: Heh heh, I'm sweet.
Kyle: Alright, alright, let's get this over with so we can put her back.
      Stan: Okay, grab the sled.

    • Korn: Oh! Nibblet!

  • NOTES (5)

  • ALLUSIONS (8)

    • Robocop:

The Halloween costume which Kenny wears in this episode is a reference to the robot ED-209 In the movie Robocop, the way the robot looks and moves are almost identical.

    • In-Jokes:

Alabama Man, the toy from the previous episode "Chinpokomon" can be seen in Cartman's Christmas catalogue along with a Phillip doll from "Cow Days" and a Mr. Hankey Playset as seen in "Mr. Hankey, the Christmas Poo."

    • Halloween Theme:

As with the previous Halloween episodes, "Pinkeye" and "Spookyfish", this episode uses the same opening. It is the last one to do so. "Hell on Earth 2006" uses the regular cut out characters intro with the techno theme tune.

    • The Wonder Twins:

When being pursued by the angry mob, Korn assume "form of corn," a reference to the Wonder Twins as they say the same thing but instead of a corn a animals name.

    • Friday the 13th:

The desiccated head of Kyle's late grandmother in this Halloween episode is modelled after the decomposed head of Jason Voorhees' long-dead mother in the horror movie Friday the 13th Part II.

    • Scooby-Doo:

The band Korn, their van and the pirate ghosts and ship were animated in the style of Scooby-Doo. Musical cues from Scooby-Doo were also featured. The laugh track, stupid trap, and ridiculously illogical explanation of the ghosts are also an allusion to the show.

    • SuperFriends:

When Korn used their Korn powers, the musical cue and the whole power's concept comes from the animated series SuperFriends.

    • KOSI 101.1 FM:

The radio station that's holding the event is a real radio station in Colorado that plays light rock. It's accually called KOSI 101.1. "Your Choice for continuous lite rock!"
