South Park

Season 3 Episode 1

Rainforest Schmainforest

Aired Wednesday 10:00 PM Apr 07, 1999 on Comedy Central

  • Trivia

    • When the construction workers find the choir group after all the kids are sitting on the truck, Kenny is in the drivers seat. Then a few seconds later he is no where near the truck and talking to Kelly.

    • This is only the 2nd episode where Kenny is alive at the end. He is initially killed by the lightning bolt, but then Kelly revives him using CPR. The only other episode thus far where Kenny lives is "Mr. Hankey, the Christmas Poo."

    • On the outside bus, we see ten windows and nine kids' heads looking forward. Yet on the inside, there are only seven kids on each side, and only five or six windows on the inside.

    • After Cartman leaves the group and goes on the other side the group comes to Yanakapas. When Yanakapas start attacking the group and the group starts running you can see Cartman running away with them.

    • In the Tony Danza scene, first lightning; Kenny and Kelly together, second one; a blonde boy instead of Kenny, then Kenny and Kelly talking, then the blonde boy and at last Tony Danza...

    • When they are singing for the first time, the buildings in the back are all normal... At the end, there is a sign on one of the buildings, "EX". - JB

    • A coral snake has the following band pattern
yByRyByRy the separator color between the large bands is yellow
A milk snake has the following band pattern
BRbYbRbYb the separator color between the large bands is black
The snake in this show was a cartoon.

And black is a color, it is a combination of all primary
colors in pigment.(subtractive), while black is the absence
of color in a reflective (additive) field such as light.

    • During the scene where the camera is showing ALL the kids tied up in the camp, Kenny is not sitting next to Kelly, yet after Stan and Kyle finish talking, he is.

    • Why are the South Park children wearing their snowsuits and beanies and stuff? Its the freakin' rainforest! they should have passed out or even died of heat stroke!

    • This one is probably REALLY nitpicky, but doesn't it seem odd that in this episode Kyle has no rhythm, but all through the movie, which came out right before, he was dancing in time with Stan and Cartman and everyone. Is that just me?

The movie came out a few episodes after this so Kyle's dancing must have gotten better over time.

    • A Coral or Milk snake couldn't possibly swallow an entire human.

    • As the kids are singing to the Costa Ricans and they bring people towards their group, a guy with a soccer ball on his shirt is on the far left of the group. Then later in the song, he switches spots with the guy who was standing next to Cartman. Also, a lady in a pink shirt was with the kids, and then when the song is over she's back watching the kids sing in the crowd.

    • When Kyles mom gave Kyle the bag and asked for him to bring her something back. It zoomed into the choir teacher, then when it zoomed back out, the bag vanished!

    • Right after Cartman leaves the group, you can see the group walking and you can't see Cartman but you can see his hat.

  • Quotes

      Craig: I'm not.
Miss Stevens: Who's not? Who's not here?
      Craig: Me.

    • Stan: All we ever heard growing up was "save the rainforest. The rainforest is fragile."
      Kyle: Yeah. Fragile, my ass!

    • Cartman: (whacks a monkey on the head with a stick) Bad monkey! Bad!
Miss Stevens: Eric! What the heck are you doing!
Cartman: I'm asserting myself! Like my Mr. Kitty! When he's bad, I say "That's a bad Mr. Kitty!" and I whack him on the head!
Tour Guide: And this is a three-toed sloth.
Cartman: (hits sloth with a stick) Bad three-toed sloth!
Miss Stevens: Eric, for God's Sake! Knock it off! (pulls Eric away)
Cartman: (throws stick at sloth's head, shouting) Respect mah authoro-tah!

    • Cartman: Look you guys can go over mnya but I am going over mnya… you mnya, me mnya… screw you guys, I'm going home!

    • Ms. Stevens: (about Cartman) Fine! You deserve to die you little bastard!

    • Kyle: Hey maybe Cartman was right.
Stan: Yea, it did happen one time before.

    • Ms. Stevens: I'm leaving some pamphlets up here on the desk if anyone is interested.
Cartman: Oh good. We could use some more toilet paper.

    • Cartman: What if you don't have any rhythm?
      Choir Teacher: Excuse me?
Cartman: Well, like my friend Kyle. He's Jewish, so he doesn't have any rhythm.
      Kyle: Shut up, fat ass!
      Stan: Choirs suck.
Mr. Garrison: Kyle Broflovski, you watch your language!! Eric Cartman, you be nice to people!! Stan Marsh, you mind your manners!! Kenny McCormick, you pay attention!! (sighs deeply and tells the choir teacher) Go ahead.

    • Stan: AHHH! SNAKE!
Kyle: No dude, that's a branch.
      Stan: Oh. AHHH! SNAKE!
Kyle: No dude, that's the same branch again.
      Stan: Oh.

    • (During a lightning storm.)
Stan: Oh my god! I just saw Tony Danza!
Ms. Stevens: No, you did not just see Tony Danza!
(In next flash of lightning Tony Danza is sitting with the kids in the circle.)

    • (While driving through San Jose, Costa Rica)
Cartman: Oh my God, it smells like ass out here.
Miss Stevens: Alright, that does it. Eric Cartman, you respect other cultures this instant.
Cartman: I wasn't saying anything about their culture; I was just saying their city smells like ass!

    • (after the GGWK choir has been saved by the deforestation workers)
Ms. Stevens: So, what are you doing out here with all this equipment?
Worker: Oh, we're tearing down the rainforest to make room a lumber yard, do you have a problem with that or something?
Ms. Stevens: Me? Oh no, you go ahead and tear down this whole f**king thing!

    • (After Kenny has been struck by lightning)
Kyle: Oh my god, they killed Kenny!
      Stan: You bastards!
      Kelley: Who!? Who killed him!?
      Kyle: They...uh, they did.
      Kelly: Who's they!?
      Stan: ..They're bastards...

    • Ms. Stevens: I F(bleep)G HATE THE RAINFOREST!

    • Cartman: So,are you going to see your girlfriend again?
      Kenny: No, dude seriously.

    • (when Kelly says Kenny's name wrong)
Kenny: (muffled) My name is Kenny… Kenny… no… Kenny.

    • Cartman: (upon passing out from hunger)
Construction worker: Get this child some food, quick!
      Cartman: Chicken wings.

    • Mr. Mackey: Did you just flip me off?
      Craig: No!
Mr. Mackey: Yes you did, you just flipped me the bird.

    • (the new and improved Getting Gay With Kids song)
You only fight these causes, because caring sells,
all you activists can go f(beep)k yourselves.

    • Militant Group Leader: We're not getting gay with any kids, okay?

    • Guide: Don't worry. The snake is more afraid of us than we are of it.
(Snake hisses and wraps itself around the Guide)
Cartman: (sarcastically) Oh yeah. The snake's really afraid of us.
      (Snake swallows the Guide whole)
      Miss Stevens: Is he dead?
      (Guide's skeleton exits the snake)
      Kyle: I would say yes.

    • The GGWK Choir: Getting Gay With Kids is here!

  • Notes

    • Despite the episode airing in 1999 in the U.S. and a few years later in Latin America, the episode has caused a bit of controversy in February of 2007 over the comments that Cartman made about Costa Rica saying that the town "smells like ass" and the way the creators show the country full of "prostitutes, shantytowns and trash". The Costa Rican Government was reportedly "not amused" with this episode. A video of this report, in Spanish, is also available on YouTube

    • This is one of the first episodes that Cartman really rips on Kyle, mainly because he is Jewish (and doesn't have rhythm). In the earlier episodes, he would say how he hated Stan just as much or Kenny. And in the "Jakovasaurs," he talks about hating Kenny more. But, in about the 4th or 5th season, it basically revolves around Cartman and Kyle fighting and in 'Kenny Dies' he says Kenny is his best friend in the whole world (not sarcastically, either)

    • This is the first episode that Kenny has a girlfriend. In the next episode, it is only mentioned for a few seconds that Kenny has a girlfriend after he dies.

    • Surprisingly, when Mister Mackey and the President are speaking, they ARE speaking Spanish.

    • This episode has also been called "Choir Tour" on rare occasions.

    • On the Season 3 Commentary for this episode, Trey Parker says this episode based on an actual trip he took to Costa Rica and did not pan out well. He claims Flea from The Red Hot Chili Peppers was the one that convinced him to go in tradition of the whole "Save the Rainforest" cause. In retrospect Trey hated it. So basically, every crude comment that Cartman makes about Costa Rica being poor and crappy is based on Trey's own experiences.

    • This is the only series of South Park which has been given an 18 certificate (the highest rating for a TV Program or movie) in the UK. Even the South Park movie only received a 15.
Edit to above: actually, it was worldwide recorder concert that was rated 18.

    • This is the first episode where Craig started flipping people off.

    • The end of the episode featured these captions:

Each year, the Rainforest is responsible for over three thousand deaths from accidents, attacks or illnesses.

There are over seven hundred things in the Rainforest that cause cancer.

Join the fight now and help stop the Rainforest before it's too late.

  • Allusions

    • King Kong:

The way that the Yanakapas tie up Ms. Stevens and offer her as a bride sacrifice to a giant Yanakapas is a parody of King Kong (1933).

    • Dumb activists:

More than anything else, this episode is a dig at activists whose political/social ideologies rule their agenda, rather than factual reasoning.
