South Park

Season 2 Episode 1

Terrance & Phillip in "Not Without My Anus"

Aired Wednesday 10:00 PM Apr 01, 1998 on Comedy Central

  • Trivia

    • Terrance and Phillip fart a total of 26 times in this episode. Not counting the uncountable number of farts that happen during the football game.

    • The Iraqi guys are all drawn like Canadians. But in later episodes they are drawn in regular South Park animation.

    • When Terrance and Phillip descide to watch some American television, a clip from Cartman's Mom is Still a Dirty Slut can be seen on the television.

    • This is the first episode of South Park to air without showing the usual credits of the city in the background with the South Park styled text, instead, it has closing movie styled credits with a different theme.

    • Visitor Sighting: An alien is seen behind an Iraqi guy, after Terrance finds his daughter.

    • This was the first episode to receive the PG rating in the United Kingdom.

    • Shirt letters are the ones in brackets:
Terrance (T), Phillip(P), Celine Dion(cd), Scott (S), Judge at trial (J), jury at trial (j), Ugly Bob (b), Fans at game (F).

    • When Scott meets Terrance and Phillip outside the Stadium, they spell out "TPS". Again, in French Canada, these three letters represent the Goods and Services Tax ("Taxe sur les Produits et les Services"), which was established in the early 1990's as an added source of tax dollars by the Brian Mulroney government. The GST has always been scorned by the general Canadian public.

    • In the first scene, Phillip is shown seated just left of Terrence, showing the letters P and T. Now, in French (one of Canada's two official languages, and since the show is based in Canada), the spelling of P and T sounds exactly like the French word "peter" (pronounced pay-tay), which means "to fart."

    • At the closing scene, the moose-like animal is actually a caribou.

    • Despite the fact that Canada doesn't have capital punishment, Terrance is saved from the gas chamber.
They also probably just said it so they could make a fart joke.

    • Phillip didn't know about Terrance's daughter, yet, when they arrived in Iran, Phillip was able to point out Terrance's daughter.

    • Saddam Hussein says that he will take over Newfoundland; however, that is only a province of Canada.

    • Despite his nationality, Saddam Hussein spoke just like the other Canadians.

    • When Terrance and Phillip talk about "Kroff Dinner," they're
actually referring to "Kraft Dinner" (Macaroni and Cheese). The pronunciation "kroff" is just a play on their accents, as is the pronunciation of "aboot" for "about."

    • When Terrance and Philip are in Tehran, Iran, there is a stand in the streets selling South Park T-Shirts with the boys on them. There is also a visitor standing behind a man at one point.

    • At one point, the scoreboard says that it is fourth down, but Canadian football only has 3 downs.

    • The credits at the end of the episode have a lot of great jokes in them...many of them either relating to farts or other famous people.

    • When Scott shows the jury a fragment of Terrance's torn shirt, the camera cuts to Terrance, revealing a hole in his sleeve. However, when the scene cuts back to Terrance again, the hole is gone.

    • Saddam Hussein says that he will take over Canada when the Ottawa Roughriders play the Vancouver Roughriders, but neither of those teams exist. Ottawa changed their name to the Renegades, and the other Roughrider team plays in Saskatchewan.

    • Saddam Hussein is taking over the football field (or whatever) and he stands on a stage that has the Canadian flag (the red one with the maple leaf) hanging from it. He replaces it with the Iraqi flag. Soon after that, the camera shows the stage up close but on the bottom of the screen you can see the Canadian flag is there (you only see one of the red bands or something), yet moments later it is back to the Iraqi flag.

    • When this episode first aired in the UK it actually aired as the season 2 finale.

  • Quotes

    • Philip: Well, while we're waiting, why don't we search for treasure?
Terrance: Oh good idea, let's search for treasure.

    • Phillip: The subway certainly is wonderful, Terrance.
Terrance: It sure is. Let's look for treasure.
Phillip: Yes. Let's look for treasure.

    • Phillip: Oh, hello, Scott. No hard feelings, right, old pal?
Scott: There ARE hard feelings! This isn't over! I'm going ta see to it that you both pay for what you've done! And do you know why?
      Phillip: 'Cause you're a dick?
Scott: No! Because I hate you! You guys think that fart jokes are so funny, but they're not! In fact, I wish you were both dead and had cancer!
      Phillip: Cancer??
      Scott: Yes; in the head!
      Terrance: "Head cancer"??

    • Scott: Ladies and gentlemen, the case before you today is of a murderer. On the night in question, this monster entered the home of Dr. Jeffrey O'Dwyer and struck him repeatedly on the head with his hammer. That monster is sitting right over there, and his name is Terrance! (Terrance farts. Both he and Phillip laugh)
Phillip: Oh, Terrance! You farted in court!
Terrance: Yes, Phillip. I'm making a case for our defense.

    • Announcer: Since the last South Park, you've waited four long weeks to find out who the father of Eric Cartman is. Now, finally, the shocking truth about Cartman's lineage …will not be seen tonight, so that we can bring you the following special presentation!

    • Phillip: Ugly Bob!
Celine Dion: Ugly Bob? You said your name was Handsome Bob!

    • Phillip: Oh, hello Ugly Bob.
Terrance: My God, you're looking hideously ugly today.
Ugly Bob: Why do you guys say stuff like that?
Terrance: Because you're goddamn ugly, Ugly Bob!

    • Scott: (on phone) Terrance, this is Scott.
      Terrance: Hello Scott.
Phillip: (from distance) Tell him he's a smelly bastard.
      Terrance: Phillip says hello, Scott.

    • Celine Dion: Why are you calling him Ugly Bob?
Phillip: Because that's his name you stupid bitch!

    • Terrance: That one's called the monkey claw because it feels like my colon is being torn about my a thousand monkeys.
Phillip: The monkey claw is smelly.

    • Terrance: You are such a dick, Scott.
      Scott: You're a dick.
      Terrance: You're a dick.
      Scott: You're a dick.
      Terrance: You're a dick.
      Scott: You're a dick.
      Terrance: You're a dick.
      Scott: You're a dick.
      Terrance: You're a dick.

    • (Phone rings, inane laughter)
Phillip: That fart sounded like a ringing phone Terrance.
      Terrance: It sure did Phillip.
      (Phone rings again)
Terrance: Oh wait, that is the phone.

    • Terrance: What are you doing?
Scott: I am wishing cancer upon you.
      Phillip: What?
Scott: I am giving you cancer with my mind.
Phillip: No, don't give me cancer!

    • Scott: Terrance and Phillip, you two are the most annoying dicks in Canada. I wish you both had cancer, in the head.

    • Phillip: Ugly Bob, your face looks like somebody tried to put out a forest fire with a screwdriver.

    • Phillip: Would a murderer go to the zoo and feed animals like this? Of course not. So, in summation, find Terrance innocent... Or else he'll KILL you!
      Phillip: Ha, ha! Just kidding!

    • Terrance: Wow! Scott really hates us, Phillip.
      Phillip: Yes, perhaps he's homophobic.
      (Terrance thinks)
Terrance: But we're not gay, Phillip.
      Phillip: We're not?

    • Terrance: No! It's Sally. She's being held captive in Iran.
Phillip: Not Sally! Dear God, no, Terrance! Why Sally?! God, why?! Say, Terrance, who's Sally?

    • Terrance: Well, Scott said to meet him here, but he's not showing up!
      (Phillip farts and they laugh)
Phillip: Well, while we're waiting, why don't we search for treasure?
Terrance: Oh. Good idea. Let's search for treasure.
(Phillip looks around, but Terrance ends up looking at his feet)
Scott: (arrives) What are you idiots doing?!
      Terrance: We're looking for treasure!
Scott: Is that some kind of metaphor for a a kind of sex that can't be described?!
Phillip: No, we're searching for treasure.

    • Terrance: Oh, Phillip. How will we ever find my fugitive daughter in this daunting place? We don't speak the language, we are unwelcome strangers, and we have no idea where to begin.
(They look across the street and Terrance's daughter is standing there.)
Phillip: Oh, look. There she is.

  • Notes

    • The first episode that Mary Kay Bergman and Isaac Hayes don't voice over in. Isaac Hayes becomes a semi occasional performer after this.

    • This is a complete 30 minute Terrance and Phillip episode as a result, Kenny does not appear in this episode. Cartman makes a brief appearance at the beginning and Kyle and Stan can be seen on T.V. very briefly while Terrance and Phillip are watching it.
This also marks the first episode where Kenny does not show up.

    • In an April Fool's joke, we were treated to this episode of Terrance and Phillip instead of resolution to the "who is Cartman's father question" that was on everyone's mind.

  • Allusions

    • Celine Dion
The mother of Terrance's daughter is Celine Dion, a Canadian singer. She won an Oscar for singing the theme song to the film Titanic.

    • The Canadian Football League:

The Canadian football game we see is between the Ottawa Rough Riders and the a made up team named "Vancouver Roughriders". This is a parody of the Canadian Football League having two teams called the Roughriders until 1996. The Ottawa Rough Riders did not exist when this episode first aired because they disbanded in 1996.

    • Not Without My Daughter:

The title of this episode is a parody of the 1991 film Not Without My Daughter.

    • Richard Nixon:

During Terrance's murder trial, Phillip says, "My client, Terrance, is no more a murderer than you or me. He loves puppies and hates mean things."

This is an allusion to Nixon's 1952 speech where he was asked to explain the $18,000 from supporters that he consumed for personal use. Instead of explaining his actions, he talked about his love for his dog, Checkers.

    • The Empire Strikes Back:

When Scott confronts Saddam over his continued occupancy of Canada, the resulting exchange - "I changed my mind. Pray that I do not change it any more." / "This deal's getting worse all the time" - is an exact replica of the similar exchange between Darth Vader and Lando Calrissian in the 1980 film The Empire Strikes Back.
