At the time of this episodes release, March 31st 2004, The Passion of the Christ had grossed Approximately $320 domestically and $380 million worldwide.
When all of Cartman's followers are at the meeting, one man asks another if he organized it. Then two seperate people have the same conversation and the same man walks over and says that it was organized by an 8 year old boy.
Apparently, Cartman is fluent in German. This makes sense, because of the genocide of the Jews by Germans; and of course, Cartman doesn't like Jewish people.
If you look at some of the people on the bus, then the crowd of people in the riot with the Christians and Jews, you'll notice a few of the same people are in there, while a few others are the same person only with their hair color different.
When Stan and Kenny first look out the back of the bus window to see Mel Gibson chasing them, only Stan's eyebrows show worry. When it flashes back after Mel Gibson is shown driving a tanker, Kenny's eyes now show worry.
I'm not sure if anyone else noticed this, Stan's voice sounds different.
Cartman's pronunciation of "Wir müssen die Juden ausrotten" is wrong, especially the Juden part. The way he says "Rache" (revenge) is also way off.
In this episode, the Jewish community in South Park was quite large. However, in "Mr. Hankey, the Christmas Poo," it was clearly stated that the Broflovski family made up the whole Jewish community. I doubt that the community could have grown so large in less than a year of Southpark time.
Edit: Most Jews may have been influenced to come to South Park, as were black people in "Here Comes the neighbourhood". Besides, they might have moved in the time between "Mr. Hankey, The Christmas Poo", and this episode.
Mel Gibson must have a British truck, because the steering wheel is on the opposite side of most American cars. But the goof is actually when the bus driver looks at Mel's truck in the mirror. The image is not reversed.
Edit: It's not British and it's not a goof, it's an Australian truck. The scene is a parody of Mad Max 2 (The Road Warrior), an Australian film which launched Mel Gibson's career with American audiences. (Mel Gibson is Australian, if you weren't aware.)
For the second time this season (also "Good Time With Weapons") someone refers to Cartman as an 8-year-old boy. He is actually 9, which his mother confirmed in the previous episode, "Up the Down Steroid."
When Mel Gibson first starts chasing Stan and Kenny, and takes out a pistol. When the chase scene continues, he now has a revolver.
While the "Passion" is not the highest grossing film ever, it is the highest grossing "R" rated film.
Stan fails to recognize Cartman's voice for a long while there.
Anyone else notice the resemblance between the rabbi and Dr. Schwartz from "Ike's Wee Wee"?
Cartman's Hitler costume looks different than it did in "Pink-Eye" when he wore it to school and got caught by Principal Victoria (unless that's not his Halloween costume, but where would you get a costume like that in a pissant whitebread mountain town?).
Kyle: No! Don't form an angry mob, the last time we did that we killed Jesus!
Mel Gibson: (runs out of his house holding a sword) Qapla! Qapla! And good evening frieeeeeeends!
Stan: This is America, and in America if something sucks, you're supposed to be able to get your money back!
Cartman: You see guys; this is why you don't bring Jews on the away team. They don't play along.
Mel Gibson: Oh no, you're not going to torture me now are you? (Lying down.) Well, go ahead and torture me, give me your best shot, you'll never break me. Oh, I hope you don't use those whips over there.
Stan: Mel Gibson is f(beep)ing crazy, dude!
Mel Gibson: I have to use that money to build my church! I brought the fire and brimstone back to Christianity with "The Passion" and now I'm gonna start my own church! And do you know why? So I can play banjo! (singing while playing the banjo) Jesus, oh how I love ya, how I love ya Jesus!
(Cartman preparing for meeting)
Cartman: Töten sie die Juden!(Kill all the jews!), Wir können nicht noch stehen, bis alle tot sind!" (We cannot stand still till all are dead!)
Cartman: Es ist Zeit für Rache! (It's time for revenge!)
Crowd: Wir mussen die Juden ausrotten! (We must exterminate the Jews.)
Cartman: And as we march for The Pasion we should also voice our support! So, when I say "Es ist Zeit für Säuberung," (meaning "It's time for the Cleansing) you all chant back "Wir müssen die Juden ausrotten." (meaning We must exterminate the Jews.)
Elise: Well, what does that mean, dear?
Jack: Oh, I think it's Aramaic. You know, like in the movie.
Ticket Clerk: Ooh, Aramaic. Cool.
Stan: Come on, Kenny! We're going to Malibu!
Kenny: (muffled) Malibu? But how?
Stan: We'll take the bus! Look, this isn't about the eighteen dollars ticket money anymore. This is about being able to hold bad filmmakers responsible! This is just like when we got our money back for BASEketball!
(After Stan & Kenny watch The Passion)
Stan: Dude. That movie sucked.
Kenny: (muffled) Yeah, it totally sucked!
Stan: How can they even call that a movie?
Kenny: (muffled) I dunno.
Stan: That's bullcrap dude, let's go get our money back.
Kenny: (muffled) Yeah!
Stan: Well it looks like with these bus tickets we spend about $87 getting our money back from Mel Gibson. But I think it's the principle of the thing that matters.
Kenny: (muffled) Yeah, I agree.
(they hear a truck horn and they see that Mel Gibson is chasing them)
Stan: Oh, you've got to be shittin' me.
Cartman: Mom, get the door!
(Doorbell rings again)
Cartman: Mom, get the damn door!
(Doorbell rings again)
Cartman: God damn lazy ass whore. (he gets up to answer the door.)
Mel Gibson: Freedom!
(phone conversation, but neither ones knows who the other is)
Cartman: Mel Gibson's "The Passion" Fan Club.
Stan: Hi, uh, my friend and I just went to see "The Passion".
Cartman: Uh huh, and so you want to join the fan club now. Our first meeting is at 5:30 P.M.
Stan: No no no, no, we want our money back.
Stan: We think the movie sucked and we want Mel Gibson to give us back our $18. Do you know how we can get in touch with him?
Cartman: You thought it sucked? Sir, apparently, you don't understand what Mel Gibson was trying to do! He was trying to express, through cinema, the horror and filthiness of the common Jew. It has made people the world over open their eyes.
Stan: Look, kid, we just thought it was a bad movie, so tell us how to get in touch with Mel Gibson so we can get our money back!
Cartman: If I knew where Mel Gibson was, I'd be down on the floor licking his balls at this very moment, sir. All I know is he lives somewhere in Malibu. Now stop wasting me and Mel Gibson's time, you little wussy prick.
Stan: Hey, don't take that tone with me, kid! I'll kick your ass!
Cartman: Oh oh yeah? I'd like to see you try, asshole! I'm like six feet tall!
Stan: I don't care! You sound like a little bitch to me!
Cartman: Bitch? Don't call me bitch! I'll pop your fuckin' head open!
Stan: Yeah? You wanna bring it, you little pussy?
Cartman: I already brought it, bitch! I brought it, set it down on the table and opened it, bitch!
Stan: Wait a minute. Cartman?
(Cartman hangs up and walks away)
(All four kids are playing Star Trek in car and imitating Starfleet space craft flying.)
Cartman: Approaching planet. What's the atmosphere reading Jew?
Kyle: I already told you I'm a Vulcan!
Cartman: All right, What's the atmosphere reading Vulcan Jew?
Kyle: Atmosphere is oxygen based. It should support our breathing.
Cartman: Okay. Stan, Kyle and Kenny are with me on the away team while Vulcan Jew Kyle waits in the shuttle craft.
Kyle: Oooh no. I'm going too.
Cartman: NO YOU'RE NOT! IT'S MY MOM'S NEW CAR AND WHAT I SAY GOES!
Kyle: GODDAMMIT CARTMAN YOU ARE NOT MAKING ME WAIT IN THE VAN AGAIN!
Cartman: Fine Kyle! But if something gose wrong out there on planet surface, don't hold me responsible.
(outside the van)
Cartman: Set phasers to stun.
Kyle: Detecting carbon based life forms. There are friendly aliens over that hill.
Cartman: There's a mutant creature! SHOOT IT.
Kids: (imitating phasers) beew beew beew beew
Cartman: Oh no! It's got Kyle.
Kyle: No, it doesn't.
Cartman: Oh god, it's got Kyle and it's ripping his head off. Kyle's a goner.
Kyle: GODDAMMIT CARTMAN YOU ARE NOT KILLING ME OFF AGAIN!
Cartman: YOU SEE! THIS IS WHY YOU DON'T BRING JEWS ON THE AWAY TEAM! THEY DON'T PLAY ALONG!
Kyle: SHUT UP ABOUT JEWS FATASS. YOU DON'T KNOW A THING!
Cartman: OH REALLY? I'VE SEEN 'THE PASSION' THIRTY FOUR TIMES NOW. YOU HAVEN'T EVEN SEEN IT ONCE! THERE'S EVEN A PART WHERE THE JEWS HAVE A CHANCE TO SAVE JESUS BUT THEY LET A SERIAL KILLER GO INSTEAD AND LAUGH ABOUT IT!
Kyle: YOU'RE WRONG.
Stan: Oh god I am sick and tired of hearing about "The Passion." I'm leaving.
(Kenny and Stan leave)
Cartman: You know what I think Kyle? I think you're scared. You're scared of the truth. If you aren't scared then go see it. Go see "The Passion" and tell me I'm wrong. 400 million dollars Kyle. The highest grossing film of all time. Those numbers don't lie. Mel Gibson Kyle…Mel…Gibson.
Kyle: You're just a stupid asshole Cartman.
Cartman: Sweeeet! Now I get to play with myself. Beew beew beew! Quick back in the shuttle craft. Beew beew!
One of the Jews seen crucifying Jesus in Kyle's dream is M*A*S*H star Alan Alda, even though Alan Alda is not, in fact, Jewish.
Cartman's German chant translates to "It is time for revenge! We must exterminate the Jews!"
Was released on August 31st, 2004 on a DVD including the episodes "Christian Rock Hard" and "Red Hot Catholic Love". This was to coincide with the release of "The Passion" on DVD.
All airings of "The Passion Of The Jew" after its first showing have a few changes in the scene where Stan and Kenny visit Mel Gibson:
Gunshots are heard when Kenny and Stan steal $18 from Mel Gibson's wallet.
More bouncy noises are put in when Mel Gibson is bouncing around.
Mel Gibson's sung line "And good evening friends" is done much differently, including Mel running outside (rathing than bouncing), he does a spin and sings his line, and walks off screen, instead of runs.
One bounce noise is added in when Mel Gibson jumps in front of the Jewish people.
Like "Good Times With Weapons," this episode has a sequence with more complex animation (Kyle's dream)
Cartman is obviously referring to Hitler when he dresses up and his plans are to exterminate the Jews when he states that he wants most of "them" on the trains headed for the camps - he is referring to Hitler's concentration camps where Jews were gassed and shot. He also keeps repeating "we all know what needs to be done" as though it was definite and agreed upon, much like what Hitler referred to as the Final Solution where the Germans all knew what needed to be done was the total extermination of the Jews.
When Stan types in Mel Gibson search a page turns up with the words Info Search on it and the word Info is written very similarly to the colorful letterings of Google. They couldn't put Google in but the put something that reminded the audience of Google instead.
Mel Gibson Sadism:
Actually Gibson is being portrayed as a masochist, defined by merriam-webster dictionary as: a sexual perversion characterized by pleasure in being subjected to pain or humiliation especially by a love object. Although it can be argued from Passion of the Christ that Gibson is a sadist, defined by M-W as: a sexual perversion in which gratification is obtained by the infliction of physical or mental pain on others (as on a love object), Gibson very clearly binds himself to a table in this episode in a fashion similar to the last few scenes of "Braveheart" in which William Wallace is having his intestines ripped out with a hook while fully concious before being beheaded (Parker ans Stone have made so many allusions to "Braveheart" that it is getting a tad ridiculous at this point). Sadism and masochism are often confused as the two have been fused together into a single word, 'sadomasochism', defined by m-w as :the derivation of pleasure from the infliction of physical or mental pain either on others or on oneself. A great deal can be read about the Marquis de Sade (from which the term 'sadism' comes) and Leopold von Sacher-Masoch (from whence the term 'masochism' is derived) and their lives. It should be noted that Mel Gibson's characters are tortured in a number of his movies.
Qapla translates into "Success" in Kligonese, the language used by the Klingons on various Star Trek series and films.
Mel Gibson: Give me back my money!
This is a reference to the famous line from the Mel Gibson character in the 1996 film Ransom- "Give me back my son". Very popular movie line now used on the Jim Rome Show.
This clever episode plays with the Nietzche's idea that those whom see Jesus' suffering as having transactional value, must be sadistic. Mel Gibson is clearly portrayed as a sadist.
Moreover, it showcases "The Passion"'s theology that the death and suffering are the most significant part of Jesus' life, and therefore of Christianity. Nietzche observed that because of the debt Jesus paid, we sinners are indebted once more, and have an enormous amount of psychological pressure bestowed upon us. That it is wrong to place guilt among "The Passion"'s audience, through Jesus' agony, is this episode's final lesson. Visit the URL for more information.
Mel Gibson: "You can torture me all you want, I still won't tell you!"
Mel Gibson repeatedly suggests that he be tortured, a reference to his penchant for torture scenes in his movies. Examples include "Lethal Weapon", "Braveheart", "Conspiracy Theory", "Payback", and of course, "The Passion...".
Mel Gibson: Freedom!
When Mel Gibson yells this, it is a reference to his 1995 film Braveheart.
At the end of Kyle's nightmare, a picture of actor Alan Alda is shown.
The chase scene in the Gibson mansion is reminiscent to Daffy Duck cartoons. (i.e., Mel jumping around shouting "hoo-hoo" and appearing in different costumes, which were clown and Carmen Miranda-style garb.)
Mad Max 2:
The tanker truck that Mel Gibson drives when chasing the bus is similar to the tanker truck he drove in the 1981 film "Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior."
Stan makes reference getting their money back for "BASEketball," the 1998 film starring South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone.
