Officer John Cooper's back problem becomes worse as Ben Sherman nears the end of his training period. Meanwhile, Lydia Adams is involved in a shoot-out while preoccupied with the teenaged son of a murder victim and Sammy Bryant turns his attention to his impending fatherhood.

The focus in this episode shifted from Det. Bryant to the other members of the precinct. Adams and Ochoa finally seem to be comfortable with each other. The first case they catch is a murdered housewife, apparently witnessed by the oldest son. He is purposefully vague on what he has seen at first, until he is told that he and his much younger siblings will be split up, if they have to go into foster care. He finally confirms what the detectives suspect - his father killed his mother. Just before her date, Det. Adams is involved in an office shootout - and has to kill the guy with the machine gun. Ochoa is injured by bullet spray, and it is while Adams is visiting her in the hospital that she finds out her date is Ochoa's son. Officer Sherman is close to finishing his training, and he wonders what to do about John Cooper's increasing dependence on painkillers. They'll have to wrap all of this up in the final two episodes of the season.moreless
