In each episode of Southland, you could say everything and nothing happens. Life on patrol is unpredictable and this makes for riveting plot points every week, yet this chaos is their routine day in and day out. A lot of this season's episodes also concerns the characters' personal lives. In my opinion, no character has been as fascinating as John Cooper. Between Michael Cudlitz's John Cooper and Shawn Hatosy's Sammy Bryant, Southland lets its actors ACT. Scenes that would be overplayed and melodramatic in other shows are subtle and affecting here. The final scene of this episode is a prime example of what Southland does best - build multi-dimensional, human characters and let the actors show you why (despite the low awareness of the show) it's one of the best on television.
