I was surprised because on most shows when someone is reluctant to take care of a dog, it ends up being a pretty boring storyline, but they made it work with Sammy here, and then the great twist at the end with him paying for the surgery and not even getting the dog made it all better.

The homeless man was one of the most powerful stories of the year for Southland too. As entertaining as it was, it also sent the message that things don't always work out in life because it did not have a happy ending.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (1)

    • The scene that involved Crazy Man (portrayed by Kirk Bovill), John Cooper and Jessica Tang in front of the patrol car was completely improvised. Kirk started ranting random things, such as apple pie, soft hands, he can see me, etc., and Michael Cudlitz and Lucy Liu just followed along. Additionally, the people seen taking pictures on the street corner at Hollywood & Vine were real tourists -- not extras.

  • QUOTES (2)

    • Sammy: (to Ben about buying a house) You need to sign on the dotted line, Ben. You need to get the hell out of Silver Lake before you start worrying about gluten and drinking raw milk.

    • Opening Voiceover: LAPD officers spend every shift trying to help people who often don't even know they need help. Some days the trying works better than others.

  • NOTES (2)

    • Police officers wear "belt keepers," which are thin straps that circle around the gun belt and attach it to the regular belt that everyone wears to hold up their pants. Without the keepers, the gun belt could fall to the ground, especially when the officer is running or doing anything else that involves moving. Officers normally utilize at least four keepers, two on the front and two on the back. The director took dramatic liberties when Ben released his belt quickly to jump into the pool to save the drowning child because unclipping the belt keepers would have slowed the action.

    • Lucy Liu and C. Thomas Howell were credited as Special Guest Stars in this episode.
