  • Space 1999 started off as a smart, strong, good looking sci-fi drama.

Commander Koenig takes over Moonbase Alpha and finds himself in a sticky situation. Under explicit orders to launch an important space mission at all costs, while at the same time trying to discover the cause of some strange new disease that is killing his astronauts, he must figure out what is going on in a hurry.

The problem seems to surround nuclear waste dumps on the dark side of the moon. Alhough tests show there is no radiation leaking, new tests show an unexpected increase in magnetic energy. The Alphans speculate that these magnetic forces are behind the illness.

But a bigger problem looms. The magnetic energy is also increasing the heat inside the nuclear pile and threatens to cause a major disaster unless the nuclear waste dump can be emptied in time...

This is perhaps one of the very best episodes of Space 1999. It has a great special effects, a good deal of detailed model work and makes use of dozens of lavish moonbase sets. It looks good and the story is smart, featuring a villian everyone can identify with; a driven bureaucrat who seeks personal glory at the risk of those who work for him. I think this show is one that any viewer, hard core sci-fi fan or not, can watch and enjoy.
