  • One of the worst episodes Space 1999 has to offer, The Beta Cloud basically is somebody in a rubber suit chasing after people.

    2.0
The first season of Space: 1999 has some classic Science Fiction episodes. But that first season didn't sell as well as Gerry Anderson wanted. The crew took this as a signal that the series has to be sexed up. They added the character of Maya (which wasn't a bad move in my opinion... it could of worked even with the Season One format) but then they decided to add a lot of unmotivated sexuality and explosions. The explosions worked for Thunderbirds, but 60s TV and Supermarionation didn't really allow for romantic kissing. But real actors were involved this time, so they decided to do both. The decision to change the series to appeal try to appeal to the action crowd made Space: 1999 a tale of two cities: some great thoughtful science fiction at one end and the worst rubber-suited schlock imaginable on the other.

Beta Cloud is a great example of this. A "Beta Cloud" appears causing various medical problems with the crew (which, coincidentally, meant that characters could be put in hospital and the shoot could be quickly done with two or three people a shot). From the Beta Cloud comes a hijacked Eagle with a menacing man in a rubber suit. I mean "horrible creature" that Maya can't replicate. I mean "android." This creature proceeds to run around after Maya and Tony. For some reason Maya and Tony have a really unromantic kissing scene in the middle of the assault, and soon they manage to knock the creature/android over the head. Then the Beta Cloud, which is never explained or understood as it would in the first series, retreats for no apparent reason and everyone is happy again. When compared to wonderful episodes like "Black Sun" it looks worse than any movie Sandy Frank ever brought to the U.S. It's some of the worst Space: 1999 has to offer.moreless
