  • Decent second part of a two part story.

    8.0
While this closes the story from the episode “Hostile Visit (1)” We get to see a episode of being caught and sent to get studied. While four members are captured we get to see how they torture and observe each member differently. While improbable the story displayed, there is a lot of interesting developments along the way. One thing that bothered me was the inconsistencies displayed. One big gaff is the running of the interment facilities. While the silicates said a reason they run the prison is the chigs have trouble with the mining facility and the atmosphere. This little things seem to annoy me. And once again the silicates are using 1990 weapons. Aside from the props and the illogical storyline there is plenty of action in this episode. One of the few episodes that shouldn’t be missed.moreless
  • Gritty and well made

    8.5
This is the second part of 'Hostile Visit'. The 58th took the 'Trojan Horse' bomber to its point of origin, what appears to be a heavily populated Chig world. They are discovered on their bombing run however, and although they drop their bomb against their target, they miss. The anti - aircraft fire causes them to use the craft's escape pod, landing in enemy territory.

Strangely, it is not the Chigs who come to the crash site, it is an AI attack party. McQueen and Hawkes escape, but the rest of the 58th are captured and taken to an AI run penal mine. Wang is tortured by the AI's, and although we dont see what is done to him, the screams make it sound like its pretty bad. The Chigs use the others for physiological experiments, allowing West to think he had escaped, and making Vansen and Damphousse choose which one of them will die. In the mean time, McQueen and Hawkes break into the prison and set about freeing the 58th from their individual torments. The Saratoga sends in a Marine APC to rescue them all and they are treated to a hero's return, even though their mission was ostensibly a failure. This conclusion of the two-parter is well written, well acted and shot in some excellent locations to make it really look like an alien planet. A very good episode all around.moreless

  • TRIVIA (0)

  • QUOTES (5)

    • Damphousse: When I'm on the battlefield and I see a human... dead- I can tell, I can feel something is missing. Something unexplainable is gone. AIs- they're like the living dead. You can feel, they have no souls.

    • Damphousse: So maybe that's what they are getting out of this; our enemy is studying its enemies' loyalty to one another. They're watching how we react. We're hamsters!
      Vansen: Guinea pigs.
      Damphousse: Right.

    • Hawkes: Most tanks sat out the AI war. Why would you give your life for a human?
McQueen: I did it... I do it for every InVitro who has ever been called a tank or a nipple neck. I do it so no one, human or InVitro, will ever be able to say that all InVitros are lazy, or cowards, or don't stand for anything.

    • (Wang screams in the distance)
      Damphousse: Paul!
Vansen: In a little while... it'll be us.

    • McQueen: We need one more thing. (rips off the arm from a dead AI)
      Hawkes: Cool!

  • NOTES (3)

    • After the series ended, Joel de la Fuente (Wang) came out and expressed unhappiness with the story arc that began in this episode and reached its culmination in the later episode "Pearly". He felt that the decision to portray Wang as having crumbled so quickly under torture was feeding into a stereotype that Asians are deficient in the courage and trustworthiness.

    • When asked in retrospect if he would do anything different about Space: Above and Beyond, show creator Glen Morgan says that he would not have done the "Hostile Visit"/"Choice Or Chance" story arc.

    • Part two of two in the "Trojan Horse" story arc.

  • ALLUSIONS (2)

    • Damphousse: When I'm on the battlefield and I see a human... dead- I can tell, I can feel something is missing. Something unexplainable is gone.

Vanessa is giving the first indication that she has extrasensory abilities, which will be the main plot point of the future episode "Level of Necessity".

    • Vansen: (after their act fools the AIs and Chig) You're Brando, babe.
      Damphousse: You're De Niro, girl.

They are referring to the critically acclaimed actors Marlon Brando and Robert De Niro.
