  • Finally an episode of thier flying skills.

    8.5
It took them fifteen, yes fifteen episodes to finally get a good introduction credits going. The narration of Mcqueen about how the war started and how they are fighting for their lives and species is quite helpful. What I really don’t like about it is the way they introduce what roles of the Marines are. They way Mcqueen describe them like Navy SEALS. SEALs stand for SEa Air and Land. Now this episode is mainly in space, purely Air Combat. We do get interrupted by the flashback memories and the love life of Shane Vansen but in essence this is about an new alien fighter craft. In the first part the Military Command deny such a craft and later they try hunt it down. This episode does have a lot of action but what I really don’t like is any other pilot but the wildcards get a black helmet with the name Saratoga on it. Just seems like the props department was too lazy to paint a call sign on it.moreless
  • The Red Baron appears!

    8.1
In this episode humanity is preparing for a long campaign against the Chig home world, but there are objectives that need to be achieved first. The first step is a deployment of a satellite vital for the fleet, but there is a problem: A mysterious new Chig weapon.

Three missions are sent out to deploy the satellite, the first is taken apart by the enemy, the second is a secret special ops mission that also fails. By this stage the brass are getting furious - and desperate. They assign a whole fighter wing to deploy the satellite, and the 35th volunteer. The 35th are a man short, so Vansen offers to take the place, the decision made harder by having an ex lover, Captain John Oakes as her new CO.

During the mission Vansen sees the mysterious new Chig weapon - the rumours were true, it is a single new fighter, but of a unknown design. The fighter destroys the satellite they had just deployed and attacks them, but Vansen eventually drives it off and the remainders of the 35th return to the Saratoga. There are too few of them left now to function as an independent squadron, so the survivors are assigned to the 58th, including Captain Oakes.

Ross is now very pissed off. He does not like losing pilots, and to have lost so many to a single fighter seems outrageous to him. He mobilises every available pilot into 'Operation Red Baron' with the objective of hunting down and destroying this enemy once and for all.

The enemy attacks and destroys a full wing of fighters - but now he's in trouble, because the 58th now know where he is. They close on him and a vicious dog fight ensues. The 58th are dismayed to find that their weapons seem ineffective against this new fighter, and it looks bad for them all. Just as the enemy is about to kill Vansen, Oakes rams the Red Baron, and they both tumble down under the cloud cover of a nearby planet. A search and rescue operation is launched for Oakes, but he is found dead. There is no sign of the enemy craft whatsoever...

This is a classic episode, the Red Baron is a great enemy, a merciless killer, a guy you love to hate. Its extremely well done, and definitely leaves you wanting to watch the next instalment, so you can finally get to see what happens...moreless

  • TRIVIA (1)

    • Elroy EL tells Col McQueen that Chiggy von Richthofen is stationed in the Achilles System. This seems to be an interesting coincidence, given that Col McQueen had earlier read aloud one of the most famous quotes by the hero Achilles from Homer's Iliad. The aforementioned quote referes to the one on one combat between Achilles and the Trojan Prince Hector, just as McQueen is about to take on the Chig Ace all by himself.

  • QUOTES (4)

    • McQueen: Well, we've found him.
Ross: What's the nearest squadron to that region?
Bridge officer: The 58th squadron, the Wildcards sir.
Ross: 'Abandon all hope', my ass!

    • West: Have they seen it?
Sullivan: They say don't even look, because if you see it, you're dead.

    • Damphousse: Hey Shane, what's with you? You've been... I don't know, kinda weird ever since they said the 35th was flying in.
Vansen: I don't know, I... I can't help this feeling, somethings going to happen, you know? Something's coming.

    • Winslow: You're working that olive like it had bought you jewellery!
