  • Something has to happen on a routine mission

    7.5
Interesting beginning of the episode, although it took the suspense of them surviving the mission by making it sort of a flash back episode. Thankfully what the flash backs being describe was events that just happened. There was no references to any events that happened in previous episodes. One thing I like about "The Enemy" episode was the fact the script mimicked what every normal soldier does, which is question what the guys (the brass) is thinking when it makes its decisions. An on the main subject is Fear and how each soldier deals with it and how to survive it. Although it was a weapon, Fear manifested is normal. I like how each had a fear to over come. In all this was a decent episode, not the best but not the worst.moreless
  • "Beyond Fear"

    7.8
In this episode, the 58th are on a supply run to a world locked in ferocious battle. The Chigs have a new weapon that they direct against infantry, and the 58th gets several doses of it. We are told that it is some kind of electronic nerve gas, taking the subjects fears and amplifying them to the point where they are incapacitated or turn on their comrades in a maddened state. The 58th pull through eventually but not before some very tense scenes where they are on the brink of tearing each other apart. We also learn the pet fears of the characters - for example, Hawkes is claustrophobic and Vansen is afraid of the dark. This is a pretty good episode, but I do feel that the writers laboured the character fears somewhat. Damphousse has a fear of blood, and because a medpack with blood packs in it leaks in one room, she refuses to go into it, and the other characters spend far too long trying to get her into the room - its a fairly inconsequential event and the time devoted to its resolution is disproportionate to its importance. They eventually decide that somebody else can do what Damphousse was going to do in that room.

Anyway, apart from that and another rather laboured \'Semper Fi!\' moment when they are running through the minefield, this is a good episode to watch and worth it just to hear the truly chilling sound of the alien fear weapon.moreless

  • TRIVIA (2)

    • Nitpick: Wang says, "Sir, you could have given him a light year, and he couldn't have explained his actions." A light year is a unit of distance, not time.

    • Nitpick: The Section 8 marine on the planet is referred to as a lieutenant, but when being questioned aboard the Saratoga, he is referred to as a sergeant.

  • QUOTES (4)

    • (Wang goes bug hunting inside the radio, and shorts it out)
Wang: (holding up the roach he skewered with his KA-BAR) It's dead! I killed it!
Vansen: It's not the only thing that's dead. And I'm not just talking about the radio.

    • Wang: (as they approach the planet where they are to be deployed) They say this planet didn't have what it took to become a star.
      Damphousse: Looks angry about it.

    • Hawkes: Come on, Wang, hurry up! It's tough to breath out here.
      Wang: Just gimme a minute.
Hawkes: We... we don't got a minute, bug man!
Vansen: (angrily) Shut up! Shut up! He can't see! He needs light, we can't see! No one can function in this darkness, but you, you broke the light, and now it's dark!

    • (Vansen steps on a land mine)
      Vansen: It's me.
      Wang: Don't move!
Vansen: Oh damn, and I was just about to start doing the hustle.
