  • Lt West character is the center of attention of this episode

    7.5
This episode is the first one after the original pilot. In this episode you get to see opening credits for the first time. After watching these opening credits you get to see who the main characters of the show are. While not as thrilling or fast paced as the pilot episode, you get a sense of how the war is settling in for the 58th. In the opening sequences a patrol finds a survivor from the 1st attack. This survivor ends up telling Lt. West about how there are survivors left on the planet. Lt West goes AWOL and tries to search for his girlfriend. What interesting about this episode it introduces CIA type characters who seem to go hand in hand with the military. This makes it an intriguing time while on board the Carrier. The is not much action sequences on the ground and a limited air engagement, I was disappointed there wasn't much of fighting but I got to see details of the Enemy Alien. Its is a good enough episode to keep me interested for the next episode.moreless
  • It's exciting as ever.

Nathan finds out that there might be hope that his girlfriend is still alive. Nathan's very purpose for joining the marines serves as an emotional core for his episode. Like the previous episodes, we see space scenes in here as well. The characters get into each other's nerves in this episode while they are fighting off an alien attack. The pacing is fast, it never gets too slow. The episode is just as exciting as the others, here the characters are explored further, their relationships have grown ever since their very first mission. they develop camaraderie with one another, and the stories is set in space.moreless
  • Nathan's hope is reborn

    8.0
So, the series is finally off! We see the 58th starting to settle in to their new home, the Saratoga. All is not well, however. A marine search and rescue team returns from Talus, where Nathan lost his love Kylen and their future together, and they are not alone. They have brought back a survivor, and Nathan is driven to break into the holding area and find out anything he can about Kylen.

The survivor appears to be close to insanity, not helped by the seemingly brutal and threatening interrogation he receives at the hands of a mysterious intelligence operative. However, Nathan gleans some information from the man: Kylen is not dead, but she is 'far from home'.

Now we see something that is perhaps undermined by being so early on in the season, Nathan breaks regulations and disobeys orders, taking a Hammerhead to go and look for Kylen himself. If this episode had been placed slightly later on in the series it may have had a greater effect, because Nathan is the straight laced pilot who goes by the book, this out of character behaviour could have had more made of it when his character was more established.

Never the less, Nathan sets off on his solo mission, leaving the other pilots of the 58th and McQueen looking on in anger.

In the course of his rescue mission, Nathan damages his plane and crash lands on Talus. Vansen and a reluctant Hawkes, knowing that without help Nathan is doomed, break away from their designated mission to attempt a rescue. After some decent action scenes and some pretty funny dialogue on the surface between Hawkes and West, the 58th and McQueen come to the rescue and take everybody home to the Saratoga, but not before West sees Kylen being taken aboard a Chig ship.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (1)

    • Vansen tells Hawkes she wants him to join her going after West so that he can "CMA". "CMA" is short for "Cover My Ass". Hawkes later says she's "going Elvis", which means "Missing In Action".

  • QUOTES (5)

    • McQueen: (about West "going Elvis") I'll be damned if he takes the easy way and dies before I can get at him.

    • West: I want you guys to know, I was close.
Vansen: (referring to Kylen) To her?
      West: To home.

    • (while being shot at)
West: I never asked you to come for me!
Hawkes: Oh, my misunderstanding, I'll just go back. Wait, my plane is in a million pieces and I'm taking incoming!

    • (Hawkes ambushes West at the Hammerhead crash site)
Hawkes: If I was a Chig you'd have a hole in your head right now.
West: Why don't you just light a bonfire? You're supposed to extinguish all traces of flame before moving on!
Hawkes: Look who's talking regulations. I wouldn't even be here right now if you hadn't made yourself your own Commander-In-Chief!

    • McQueen: (referring to Nathan's and the 58th's UA from patrol duty) Enough! It's not to be talked about, those are orders. I know Commodore Ross, he wouldn't hesitate for a second to court-marshal all of us. Someone higher up obviously pulled a string. If we're not careful, we could be hanging from it.

  • NOTES (1)

    • This is the first episode in which the 58th use playing cards as their callsigns. Vansen's is "Ace of Diamonds", but in later episodes she'll be designated as "Queen of Diamonds".
