Episode Summary

EDIT
Surgical Strike
AIRED:
A civilian airplane goes down over France with a large number of American citizens on board. It is reported as an accident but it was actually shot down by an anti-aircraft missile. The American government believes that it is the work of Libyan terrorists and want to show them that this sort action will no go unpunished. They cannot take any overt form of action though so the SOF team is brought in: they're the perfect people to disavow if everything goes wrong.

Matt has to get the team to work out a way to get into Tripoli, find the main munitions plant there and then use lasers to guide two missiles, fired from British jets, onto the target. Aware that CJ's brother died after being tortured in a Libyan jail, Matt tells CJ that he's riding the bench on this op. But when the chips are down, it's CJ to the rescue, who learns that maybe all Libyans aren't the enemy!moreless

    Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

    FILTER BY TYPE

    • TRIVIA (7)

      • Goof: When the General starts crawling towards the detonator the timer reads 26 seconds, but the actual time elapsed before the explosion is 40 seconds.

      • Goof: When Chance sets the timer for the explosion he says that he's going to set it for a one minute delay. But when their cover is blown, he says he's going to change it to 45 seconds, but never actually does it, it just turns on set at the shorter time.

      • Goof: When rescuing CJ, Matt throws two knives, first at a guard, and then at the General. But this is a goof for two reasons, the first being that since the General had a gun on CJ and the guard was standing at ease, Matt should have targeted the General first as the most dangerous target. The second reason is that Matt was standing behind a wall, and had no clear line of sight to even see the General, let alone hit him with a knife throw to the heart from five meters away!

      • Goof: When CJ is hit by the cattle prod, his fingers straighten out and spread to their furthest extent possible. But a cattle prod delivers an electrical shock, which means that his muscles should have contracted, causing his hands to respond in the opposite manner and clench into fists.

      • CJ is quite good at pretending to be Irish, perhaps because his mother was Irish. CJ took after his English father in his political leanings, apparently, because he served in Northern Ireland with the SAS.

      • Chance gets quite exercized when Benny Ray is overly critical of the Muslim faith, hinting that he is perhaps Muslim himself. But in other episodes he wears a cross.

      • CJ says that Colonel al-Qadhafi has fifty children. Officially, he has eight children, seven sons and one daughter, as well as one adopted daughter. Hanna, the adopted daughter, was said to be killed by the 1986 US bombing of Libya, which was ordered in retaliation for several acts of terror believed to be sponsored by the Libyan Government.

    • QUOTES (7)

      • Libyan General: (as he interrogates CJ) There are only two types of people: those who talk, and those who die. I will not let you die!

      • Matt: (as they prepare to assault the munitions facility) Got everything you need?
Benny Ray: Oh, yeah! We only steal the best.

      • CJ: (across the street from the munitions factory) Major, don't you think we're a little close? I mean, when you were talking about collateral damage, I didn't know we'd be part of it!
Matt: Now you're not getting cold feet on me, are you CJ?
CJ: No! I just perfer cold feet to hot shrapnel, sir.

      • Benny Ray: Ours is not to reason why, Major, ours is to blow the place sky high.

      • Chance: This your crib, man?
CJ: Nah. Been spending most of my time in an IRA resort on the outskirts of town. Should definitely dine there sometime. Nothing like boiled cabbage and falafel.

      • Margo: (drinking coffee in Tripoli) Well, they may call it coffee but it's really just chemical warfare.

      • CJ: In case you've forgotten, (pulls out a photo of himself and his brother) my brother died in a Tripoli jail cell. He was tortured to death in the cell next to mine. I owe them big time!
Shepherd: Well then, I don't have to explain why you can't go.

    • NOTES (0)

    • ALLUSIONS (2)

      • CJ: (being interrogated by the Libyans) Did I tell you about my time with the Tuareg in the Sahara? The blue people? Great, bleeding Bedouin Smurfs they were, eight feet tall in their stockinged feet!

The Tuareg nomads are known as the blue people because they dye their clothes with indigo, and the dye rubs off onto their skin, giving it a bluish cast. That reminded CJ of the small, blue The Smurfs, who were the heroes of an eighties Saturday morning cartoon.

      • CJ: Who were you expecting, Lawrence of Arabia?
T.E. Lawrence, CB, DSO, was Britain's liason with the Arabs during the Arab Revolt of 1916. His exploits were later made into the movie Lawrence of Arabia starring Peter O'Toole.
