Burt brought him to California and let him stay in his home there until he got his acting break. He was starring in the TV series "The Lazarus Man" (1996) when he was diagnosed with cancer, which caused the cancellation of the series. • Avery Brooks

    Hawk

    9.1
For a man without any hair, Avery Brooks certainly wears a lot of hats. Stage, screen and television actor; director; jazz and opera singer; college professor; film narrator; civil rights activist; Avery Brooks excels at every career path he has chosen. Born in Evansville, Indiana, he and his family moved to Gary, Indiana, when Avery was eight years old. His father, Samuel, worked as a machinist and as a singer in the choir of CBS radio's "Wings over Jordan" choir from 1937 to 1948. His mother, Eva, was a pianist and a choir director and his uncle, Samuel, was a member of the "Delta Rhythm Boys". It's no surprise that Avery took to singing at an early age being surrounded by so much musical talent. As he developed his deep, baritone voice, Avery sang with musical acts like Butch Morris, Lester Bowie, Jon Hendricks and James Spaulding. As an accomplished pianist, he feels as though the music he plays is a spiritual gift from God. In his own words, he feels that "Everybody is playing or listening to this black cal music is the highest form of performance on the earth--from God, to you, through you, to your ear". Avery Brooks enrolled to Indiana University and Oberlin College. He later received his BA and his MFA from Rutgers University in 1976, making him the first African American to achieve this at Rutgers. He later used that distinction to inspire other African Americans to pursue their goals in acting and directing by becoming a tenured professor of theatre at the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers. In addition, he had also taught at his alma-mater of Oberlin College as well as at Case Western Reserve University. For over three decades, Professor Brooks has helped to hone the skills of thousands of actors and theatre professionals. Not being one to ignore the axiom "practice what you preach", Brooks continued to perform on stage himself as he was teaching future generations to do the same. He had received critical acclaim in the play "Paul Robeson" in which he played the title role. His portrayal of the famed singer, actor and civil right leader reflected all of Avery's passions as well. He performed the one-man play for several years at the Westwood Playhouse in Los Angeles, at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC and at the Longacre Theatre on Broadway. His stage career continued quite successfully afterwards, playing the lead role in Shakespeare's "Othello" and "A Midsummer Night's Dream" as well as Anthony Davis' "X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X". Although he had seen considerable success on stage, his exposure to the television audiences was limited. After having only been on television playing the title role in PBS's Solomon Northup's Odyssey and a bit part in Finnegan Begin Again, he was cast to play the tight-lipped and menacing tough guy "Hawk" in the new ABC crime drama, Spenser: For Hire opposite lead actor, Robert Urich. Avery's character became so popular among fans of the show that a spin-off was created for him: A Man Called Hawk. The spinoff only lasted half a season, but Avery was called back to play Hawk in a number of Spenser: For Hire movies of the week. The exposure that the role gave him drew the attention of Rick Berman, who had been auditioning actors for the newest addition to the Star Trek universe, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Originally, Berman wanted to cast Siddig El Fadil as Commander Benjamin Sisko after seeing him in A Dangerous Man. However, when he saw Siddig without the beard he had worn in that film, he realized just how young he was. He kept Siddig on to play Dr. Julian Bashir, but the hunt for a commander was still on. When Avery came in to audition, he was motivated by the idea of being connected with a show that had broken so many barriers for African Americans in the 1960s (With Lt. Uhura being a black female officer in the original show when any two of those three conditions were considered unthinkable at the time). He wanted to be the first African American commander in Star Trek history. Despite competing with nearly 100 other actors of various ethnicities, Avery came out on top with the most impressive performance. When working out the character with Berman, he did not want his character to be anything like Kirk or Picard. They were explorers and diplomats (with the emphasis of each characteristic differing between the two men). He wanted Benjamin Sisko to be a builder. Since his command would have him remaining in one place, his goal would be to develop a community from these diverse and varied species and personalities that haven't been trained to work together as a Starfleet crew would have been. As another departure from the commanders that preceded him, his character did not want to be where he was. He had just suffered a tragic personal loss and wanted nothing more than to resign his commission and fade into the background. Berman agreed and Benjamin Sisko was born. Throughout the seven year run of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Avery not only played the role of Sisko, but he had also directed several episodes of the show and he continued to teach his s at Rutgers. On occasion, he had conducted his by way of video link while still wearing his Starfleet uniform from the set. Like Bill Cosby before him, Avery Brooks wants to use every resource at his disposal to assure that the next generations of African Americans don't have to endure the burden of racism; that poverty is a result of a failure to educate the youth of the community and that young African American men should not have to go through life certain that they'll be killed or imprisoned before their 25th birthdays. Avery Brooks will try to educate the people about his heritage. "I grew up in the context of a black community where ideas such as dignity and integrity and proper behavior still existed," he told Martha Southgate during an interview for Essence magazine. "I thought that was the way the whole world was, and I will insist that, ultimately, that's the way it still is."moreless

    Rita Fiore (1986-1987)

    8.8
Carolyn trained at San Francisco's American Conservatory Theater (ACT). She played in her first feature, the interesting science-fiction saga "Enemy Mine" while completing her graduate studies. She joined the company of the ACT for a time thereafter, but TV work picked up when she joined the cast of the detective series, "Spenser: For Hire", during its second season in 1986 to play Rita Fiori, feisty young assistant D.A. and romantic sparring partner for series star Robert Urich. Carolyn subsequently did regional stage work and played a recurring role as Minuet, a computer-generated ideal woman, on the popular science-fiction series, Star Trek: The Next Generation. Occasional feature work, as in "A Simple Twist of Fate", came her way, but Carolyn was primarily seen as intelligent police psychiatrist Elizabeth Olivet, another recurring role, on most of the series episodes of acclaimed "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit " from 1991 to 1997. In the fall of 1997, she moved on to become the unhappy wife of a police psychiatrist played by Robert Pastorelli in the short-lived Americanized version of "Cracker (1997)". • Richard Jaeckel

    Lt. Martin Quirk (1985-1987)

    9.1
A short, stocky and tough character actor in films for over fifty years, Richard Jaeckel has probably played just about every role possible. Upon his discharge, he returned to acting and was cast in the 1949 film "Sands of Iwo Jima" with John Wayne and Forrest Tucker. • Seth Green

    Andy Chandler

    9.3
Seth was born to Herbert, a mathematics teacher, and Barbara, an artist in Philadelphia, PA. The couple already had a daughter, Kaela also an actress. Seth and Kaela were raised in Overbrook Park, PA. It is said that a photograph of him being born was used in an ad campaign for natural childbirth, but Seth's mother has denied this rumor. Seth attended public school and played soccer. He decided to make acting his career at age six when he took part in a workshop in his hometown and after appearing in a summer camp performance of "Hello, Dolly!" Seth actually got his start in commercials as a child including a John Denver Album, Fruit Loops, Carl's Jr., Rally's (the origination of the catchphrase "Cha-Ching!" which still follows Seth around to this day), Wendy's, Jello Pudding Pops, Kodak, Hewlett Packard Printer, California Department of Health Services on Smoking and most recently the US Sci-Fi Channel. One of his commercials was with Sarah Michelle Gellar, when she was four years old.

He went on to appear in such illustrious telly as The X-Files, The Wonder Years, Beverly Hills 90210, Evening Shade, seaQuest DSV (as Wolfman, maybe a sign of things to come?) before his extended exposure on Buffy, the Vampire Slayer as Oz.

He has appeared in many movies including: Hotel New Hampshire, Radio Days (as a young Woody Allen), My Stepmother Is An Alien (as Alyson Hannigan's boyfriend, another omen?), Pump Up The Volume (with Juliet Landau also of Buffy fame), the 1992 movie version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (his scenes were cut), Austin Powers: International Man Of Mystery, Stonebrook, Idle Hands, Enemy Of The State, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, Can't Hardly Wait.

Interestingly, Seth had a part in the movie version of Buffy - unfortunately, his part ended up on the cutting room floor, though a still photo of him (as a vampire) is on the back of the box of the US video release.

He graduated from Lamberton High School in 1991.

Though Seth has a very large list of credits, he didn't gain notoriety until Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Austin Powers came along.

Now he has less anonymity and a lot of fans to attest to it, from two distinctly separate groups eleven to seventeen-year-old girls and drug-dealers.

While his involvement with the Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie only goes back as far as the cutting room floor of 1992 he is apparently on the cover of the US video release.

In 1997 his return to the realm of Buffy came, it was not as grand as it would become: his contract was only for three episodes in Season Two (namely 'Inca Mummy Girl', 'Halloween' and 'What's My Line, Part One') as Oz, the first person to show an interest in Willow [Alyson Hannigan], but fairly early on it became apparent to Buffy creator Joss Whedon that Seth and Alyson got on well enough to make more of Oz and so he increased Oz's relevance to the story of 'What's My Line' and put him in Part Two (taking a bullet for Willow). Whedon wanted to give the characters besides Buffy [Sarah Michelle Gellar] more of a private life and Willow's love life had really only been explored with Xander [Nicholas Brendon]. Whedon wanted the audience to hate Oz for driving Willow and Xander apart and then love him. He wrote Oz into the big two part story of season two: 'Surprise' and 'Innocence' and gave him a scene with Willow where he tells her how he feels about her and it worked, Oz fans appeared all over. Oz was officially admitted into the Scooby Gang when he saw Buffy slay a vampire at The Bronze, helped steal a rocket launcher from the army and pick up immolated parts of a dead invincible demon. Not bad for a day's work.

Joss Whedon gave a copy of the next episode's script to Seth as a way to convince him to become a regular for the next season. It worked and Oz became the werewolf in 'Phases'. In 'Bewitched, Bothered And Bewildered' he searched for Buffy after Amy [Elizabeth Anne Allen] turned her into a rat. In 'Passion' someone had to die and it was going to be Oz, but his signing up for the third season fortunately scuppered that and the unlucky honour fell to Jenny Calendar [Robia La Morte]. After his rodent recovery duties in 'Bewitched, Bothered And Bewildered' he next appeared in the both parts of the two part Season Two finale 'Becoming, Part Two'. In the latter part of that Willow is in a coma and Xander, sitting at her bedside tells her he loves her, she wakes up and the first thing she says is "Oz?".

He made Entertainment Weekly's '1998 It List,' the magazine's annual pick of the hottest stars.

Oz naturally returned in Season Three in 'Anne' with a promotion to series regular and as part of the Buffy-absent slaying. In 'Dead Man's Party' and 'Faith, Hope & Trick' he is an integral part of the Scooby Gang. The next episode 'Beauty And The Beasts' starts as an Oz feature episode, but becomes a reminder of who Angel [David Boreanaz] is. For the remainder of the season Oz fulfils two roles: Willow's boyfriend and 'boy-in-a-band'. This is primarily due to the sheer amount of screen time devoted to new slayer Faith [Eliza Dushku]. That said he is still great in every scene in which he appears, highlights include 'Band Candy', 'Lover's Walk', 'The Wish', 'Amends', 'The Zeppo', 'Dopplegangland', 'Choices' and 'Earshot'. He becomes increasing under-utilized as the season progresses until 'Graduation Day, Part One and Two' where he has some of his best scenes all year.

Having decided to leave Buffy for a further career in movies Seth handed in his noticed and agreed to appear in the beginning of Season Four. In 'The Freshman' the gang (minus Angel and Cordelia [Charisma Carpenter], who have left for LA and their' own show: Angel) relocate to UC Sunnydale. In 'Living Conditions' Oz spots Veruca [Paige Moss] on campus and is strangely attracted to her (all in a split second). 'The Harsh Light of Day' and it's Angel crossover 'In The Dark' gave Oz double duties as he took the Gem of Amarra retrieved from Spike [James Marsters] and gave it to Angel and then helped Cordelia & Doyle [Glenn Quinn] save the day. In 'Fear, Itself' the gang get to feel the worst fears coming true two of which: Oz losing control of the wolf within and Willow losing Oz would come true two episodes later. Oz is almost infatuated with Veruca all through 'Beer Bad' and discovers that she is a werewolf like him in 'Wild At Heart' and they attack Prof. Walsh [Lindsay Crouse]have sex in wolf form. Realising he has no control over his wolf side he flees Sunnydale and Willow.

When he left to make the thriller 'Knockaround Guys' (with John Malkovich and Barry Pepper) it was not known if he was going to return. It was expected that he would and in a regular role, those with expectations were half right: he did return in 'New Moon Rising' but only as a guest star. Oz claims to have found a cure for his condition and doesn't change on the night of a full moon and he and Willow seem likely to be back together until Willow tells Buffy that she and Tara [Amber Benson] are involved. Oz meets Tara and is enraged and transforms into wolf form warning her to "Run". He is caught by The Initiative and almost killed by Riley [Marc Blucas] because he mistakenly thought Oz was the demon that attacked co - soldier Graham [Bailey Chase]. When Riley realises that it is Oz he attempts to help him escape risking a court martial at the hands of Col. McNamara [Conor O'Farrell] and held in the brig. Willow, Buffy, Xander and Spike attempt to break both of them out with the help of Giles, Anya [Emma Caulfield] and albeit unwittingly Adam [George Hertzberg]. Oz suspects that it is Willow that brings out the wolf in him and leaves again, Willow professes her love to Tara.

He also appears in the season finale, 'Restless' in Willow's dream as a metaphor for her life with him being different to her life with Tara. Only time will tell whether he will return to Buffy or in fact Angel. The rumours say yes, but then they always do. Don't they?

As for the future, Seth is apparently not interested in directing, but he would like to produce, as well as keep acting. He and his best friends Breckin Meyer and Ryan Phillippe have an office where they peruse scripts, and they are aiming to produce films together.

Next on the horizon the dark comedy Scorned. The film, which is based on an idea from Seth and his childhood-friend-turned-screenwriter Hugh Sterbakov, centres on a young engaged couple whose romance takes an ugly turn when they head to college; the affair becomes a grudge match, and the pair's dorm turns into a war zone.moreless

After 2 years, Sarah left the set of AMC and moved to California to seek new fame in films or TV.

In 1996, Sarah was picked as the lead of a new series called Buffy the Vampire Slayer based on the movie by the same name. He received his initial interview with the creators of Frasier (1993) due to his close resemblance to Kelsey Grammer. After the interview, the part of Dr. Niles Crane was written for him. Prior to Frasier, David starred in the former series The Powers That Be (1992), in which he portrayed Theodore Van Horn, a chronically depressed and suicidal United States congressman. His additional television credits include guest-starring roles on the series Spenser: For Hire, Caroline in the City, The Outer Limits and The Simpsons. David is the co-chairman of the Alzheimer's Association for which he works tirelessly to raise funds and awareness of the condition. (DHP's beloved grandfather and other relatives died from the condition) In March 1999, he was honored by The Alzheimer's Association for all his devoted work with them over the past few years with a dinner in his honour in Los Angeles. While not on set, David enjoys playing piano (he is also an accomplished organist), being with his dog, and skiing.moreless

  • Andrea Thompson

    Martha Prince

    8.7
Andrea Thompson is a versatile woman with a career that has extended to modeling, acting, journalism, and voice work. She was born in the USA in the state of Ohio in 1959, and moved to Australia when she was six years old. She has four siblings, and is very independent.

She traveled for five years after graduating from high school at 16. Eventually, she landed in New York city where she pursued modeling and took acting lessons at Strasberg Studio and the Herbert Bergdorf Studios.

Early successes in her career include "Delirious" with John Candy, Oliver Stone's "Wall Street," the television series "Falcon Crest," for which she was bestowed a Soap Opera Digest award.

In 1987, she married Davod Guc. They divorced in 1990.

Her son Alec was born in 1992.

Andrea moved to to Los Angeles, where she played Talia Winters in the space science fiction TV series "Babylon 5."

In 1995 she married co-star Jerry Doyle who played Security Chief Michael Garibadi on B5. They divorced in 1997.

She left Babylon 5 to join the cast of "JAG" as Commander Krennick. The feature film "A Gun, A Car, A Blonde" followed as did a guest-star role in the HBO series "Arli$$," and a role in the feature "The Lost Valley."

She went on to portray Detective Jill Kirkendall on "NYPD Blue." This became one of her two most memorable roles besides Talia on B5. To research the role she accompanied detectives from both the Son of Sam and Zodiac murder cases. The research proved valuable, combined with her hard work and long days, and Andrea was a success on the show.

Unfortunately, she became a victim of a stalker, and in December 1998 her stalker, Italian designer Gianluigi Assenato, was sentenced to two years in prison and subsequent deportation. The event was a factor in her becoming a strong advocate for victims.

The hours on "NYPD Blue" were long and eventually Andrea announced she would be leaving the show. She wanted to spend more time with her son and pursue a journalism career. She moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, and started as a reporter for KRQE-TV. A position followed as an anchor at CNN Headline News.

Recent work includes a role on "Medical Investigation" as Dr. Lois McCarthy, a role on "24" as Dr. Nicole Duncan, a role on "Touching Evil" as Justine Hazelton and a reprise on "JAG" as Alison Krennick.
