  • Spidey must battle the Insidious Six... without his powers.

    9.7
Continuing directly from where the last episode left off, Spidey has to face the Insidious Six in order to save his Aunt. Only problem is, he can lose his powers at any moment because of his disease. The animated fight scenes are spectacular, as Spidey is more than overpowered by his enemies. They capture him, and are ready to unmask him.

The build up is nerve wracking, and the moment Doc Ock removes Spidey's mask to uncover Peter Parker was one of the most intense secenes this show offered so far.

Fortunately for Spidey, Doc Ock believes Peter just put on a Spider-man costume to come and save his aunt, and that he isn't the real Spidey. This saves Peter, but only for the moment, as the Insidious Six take him hostage, and force him to take them to real Spider-man. Peter accepts, seeing that there is no other way to save his aunt. A nice touch was the way the relationship between Peter and Doc Ock was expanded. Since it was introduced back in the first season, it developed and offered us some more exciting scenes in this episode.

Peter manages to escape from the Insidious Six, by faking his rescue by Spidey himself. Spidey battles the Six once again and, even if he doesn't win the battle, he comes close to it. He manages to escape this time, when the Kingpin calls his Insidious Six back to their headquarters for another job: kidnapping Silvermane, another crime boss and his rival.

Spidey comes to save Silvermane, and defeats the Insidious Six one by one, by using his mind. A rather simple task, seeing that the Rhino was one of the Six, and his intelligence was a little low. By tricking various of his enemies he is actually the Chameleon disguised as Spider-man, Spidey manages to turn the Six against each other, letting him escape together with Silvermane (who he doesn't know who he is, but will learn later on during the series, in another story arc).

The ending was incredibly well done, and one of the most exciting ones the show ever had (possibly second only to Venom's first appearance on the series): Spidey, now cured and happy (or so he thinks), is talking to Doctor Connors about his test results, believing they won't create him anymore problems. But what Connors tells him shocks him (as well as us, the viewers): he is turning into something that is not human.

Overall, a really good episode with a superb ending. And this is only the beginning of Spidey's Neogenic Nightmare.moreless

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (3)

    • The jungle created by Mysterio's cubes is supposed to holographic, but the Six and Spider-Man are able to push the plants aside, even making rustling noises as they do!

    • When searching for Spider-Man and Silvermane, Shocker's costume had been ripped open by the Rhino. Then he fell into a huge storage container of water, and he had to get completely out of his suit because it was about to blow up. However at the end of the episode, the Insidious Six decide to each go their seperate ways, and the Shocker is among them with his costume on. It didn't seem like he had time to put on another one. (I doubt he even had a spare suit, though it would have probably been with the Kingpin if he did, and the Six never returned to him after the battle.)

    • When the Insidious Six decide to split up, Doc Ock's tentacle is back to normal in the long shots, although it is fixed in the close-ups.

  • QUOTES (26)

    • Smythe: Now Silvermane will rally the crime lords against you. You've dug yourself an awfully deep grave this time.
Kingpin: This is only a temporary setback. In the end, Silvermane will be the one to occupy that grave.

    • Spider-Man: (After watching the Scorpion's acid dissolve one of Doctor Octopus' mechanical arms) Ouch, I'd hate to see the repair bill on that.

    • Spider-Man: (As the kingpin's searchlight shines on him and Silvermane) You know I've never been one to seek out the spotlight.

    • Spider-Man: (After the Shocker's costume blows up) Whoa, talk about wearing flashy clothes.

    • Spider-Man: (Swinging Doctor Octopus out of the way) I just have to toss out the garbage.

    • Spider-Man: So, why'd you get invited to this little party?
Silvermane: I'm very wealthy. They said they were holding me for ransom.
Spider-Man: You got to hand it to those guys, they've never met a crime they didn't like. Stay here until I come back, if I come back.

    • Spider-Man: (After Spider-Man and Silvermane tumble into a building) Smooth, just the way I planned it.

    • Kingpin: (After seeing Spider-Man land on the helicopter crane holding Silvermane) I hadn't realized we were fishing for spiders, eh Smythe. (Starts the lift on the crane)

    • Peter: Time to give an award winning performance. Lookout Spider-Man, it's an ambush.
      Shocker
: (While firing a blast at Peter) Shut up!

    • Doctor Octopus: Since my number one student says Spider-Man is due at midnight, it's time I gave myself some elbow room. (His mechanical arms bust through his jacket)

    • Bellhop: Coats, gentlemen?
Peter: No thanks, already got one.

    • Silvermane: Hey, I thought you said we were going to the basement.
Chameleon: (Transforms into the Kingpin) You also thought you were a match for Kingpin. On both counts, you were wrong.

    • Kingpin: (Before he begins his attack on Silvermane) And now it's time to pay the piper.

    • Chameleon: (About Peter's Aunt May, disguised as a nurse) Now remember Parker, if you don't lead us to Spider-Man, we'll go after her again. This time, she'll need the hospital bed.

    • Chameleon: (To Peter's Aunt May, disguised as a nurse) Don't worry ma'am, with Doctor Octavius your nephew's in the very best of hands.
Peter: (To himself) Yeah, all six of them.

    • Kingpin: (To Smythe) The crime lords are going to hit me, but I will hit them first. And thanks to my Insidious Six, I will hit them harder.

    • Silvermane: It seems my congratulations were premature Kingpin. We crime lords asked you to destroy Spider-Man and instead you kidnap an old lady and strong-arm her weak nephew, pathetic. To think I use to admire you.

    • Shocker: (To Peter) What do you take us for, fools? I'm shocked, and you're going to be too.

    • Mysterio: I say we destroy him now!
Doctor Octopus: You're mind is as empty as that fishbowl you cover it with. Can you not see the truth? He is not Spider-Man.
      Peter: I'm not?

    • Silvermane: (After seeing that the Kingpin's Insidious Six has captured Spider-Man) What's this? You've actually caught the vermin?
Kingpin: You see it with your own eyes, assuming that they have not failed you yet, old man.

    • Doctor Octopus: (To Spider-Man) Why do you not fight us?
Spider-Man: (To himself) For one simple reason, without my powers I'm as phony as this jungle. Still got to avoid the wild animals though, and that includes Rhinos, (Gets hit by the Rhino) Scorpions, (Gets hit by the Scorpion) and especially octopi. (Gets captured by Doctor Octopus)

    • Shocker: (To Spider-Man) Time to take your medicine you fly eating fool, and my shock therapy's just what the doctor ordered.

    • Doc Ock: The last time I fought Spider-man he was formidable, powerful, agile, almost invincible. This time he was ridiculous.

    • Spider-Man: (To the Insidious Six) I took care of that snitch Parker, and now I'm gonna take care of you. (To himself) Yeah, right. For starters, I might just drown you all in nervous sweat!

    • Spider-Man: (Lowering Silvermaine down a chimney) Sorry about this, but if you yell "ho-ho-ho" real loud, there's less chance you'll get stuck.

    • Doc Ock: Spider-Man is... Peter Parker?!

  • NOTES (1)

    • A part of this episode takes its cue from one of the early Spider-Man issues that features Doc Ock. Spider-Man has a cold when he battles Doc Ock and is easily defeated and unmasked. Similarly this happens here, and the reaction is that Peter Parker can't be Spider-Man because he didn't put up too much of a fight.

This is also borrowed from the first Amazing Spider-Man Annual, which introduced the Sinister Six. In its story, Peter had his powers phasing in and out, too, over the course of some of his battles with the Six. In a story element that would be mirrored in the movie Spider-Man 2, as well, it turns out his weakening powers were apparently all based on Pete's deep seated guilt and insecurities.
