Season 1 Episode 11

The Hobgoblin (1)

Aired Saturday 10:00 AM May 20, 1995 on FOX

  • Trivia

    • While Fisk is making his speech, a scene is shown of the Hobgoblin with his gun ready to fire. When Fisk continues talking, the Hobgoblin is shown pulling the gun from his belt.

    • The man in the Hobgoblin costume looks completely different in this episode than he does in later episodes. In the beginning of the episode, he is seen dark skinned and bald. But, in Goblin War, he has brown hair and lighter skin.

  • Quotes

    • Peter: You gotta let me see Mr. Osborn. I'm his son's roommate.
Guard: Wouldn't matter if you were his mother. He is not to be disturb.

    • Hobgoblin: If I'm going back then, I need that other weapon.
Norman Osborn: I've already given you what I have.
Hobgoblin: Come on, Norm. You geniuses always make one thing and have a better one in one of the drawing boards.

    • Hobgoblin: Osborn! We need to talk.
Norman Osborn: Talk? You kidnapped my son! (tries to grab Hobgoblin but misses)
      Hobgoblin: The Kingpin's a double-crossing snake.
Norman Osborn: You're a lying opportunist! (grabs a gun and points it to the Hobgoblin)
: Naturally, but this time, I'm telling the truth. And I got a plan. We can get Fisk together.
Norman Osborn: What are you suggesting?
Hobgoblin: You have your company and your son.
Norman Osborn: What's in it for you?
Hobgoblin: I want the Kingpin. (Smythe smiles upon seeing the deal)

    • Kingpin: Ah, Norman. Glad to see you at work.
Norman Osborn: What is it, Fisk? I'm a busy man.
Kingpin: Too busy to talk about your son? (reveals Harry as hostage)
Norman Osborn: Harry! What is this, Fisk?

    • Smythe: (About Hobgoblin) He'll be the end of us. He's devious, a liar, and entirely too ambitious!
Kingpin: Exactly! Those are precisely the qualities one needs to succeed in this business!

  • Notes

    • This was adapted into comic book format in Spider-Man Adventures #11. It was later reprinted in Giant-Sized Amazing Spider-Man #1 (Reprint comic), Spectacular Spider-Man (UK Magazine) #6 and Spider-Man UK Annual 1998.

    • This episode, as well as "The Hobgoblin Part 2" were released on VHS in 2002. Morningstar Entertainment released a Limited Edition DVD version of the same in July 2008.

    • The Hobgoblin originally appeared in Amazing Spider-Man#238.

    • This marks Hobgoblin's first animated appearance in a Spider-Man cartoon.

    • In the comics, the Green Goblin was the first goblin, not the Hobgoblin. In the comics the Hobgoblin was a master crook who discovered one of the Green Goblin's hideouts after his death. He then used the equipment in the hideout to become the Hobgoblin.
