  • Well written, powerful but very funny.

It seems that in many good sitcoms that the more serious the topic of the day is, the funnier the episode ends up being. This simple logic is especially true in this episode, "In the Heat of the Day". Racism is the issue tackled in this episode, as Carter is wrongfully arrested while jogging in Central Park. This sounds like it would be a semi-dark plot, but there is plenty of comic relief present, with some hilarious jokes put in at all the right moments. Also, in one of the subplots, Stuart tricks Paul (who else?) into thinking he is racist. This leads to two absolutely hilarious scenes. This is Spin City at it's finest, with excellent writing, quick-witted and sharp jokes, and superb acting (as usual).moreless

    • Carter (after being released from police custody): Thank you very much. Once again, I'd like to apologize for... wait a second, what did I do? Oh, that's right... Nothing!

    • Mike: After all the fat kids have been picked on all day, we'll just arm them with bows and arrows.

    • (Mike is on TV)
      Mike: I can't believe that's me.
Mayor: Oh, I know all about that. You're here talking, but you're also there talking...very trippy stuff.

    • Mike: The Mayor's attempted push-up has taken all the fat kids of New York and put them on the front page. We need a response.
      Stuart: Bigger front page?

    • Stuart: James, did you, uh (clicks his stapler)?
      James: Did I staple her?

    • Paul: Hello black man.

    • Carter: Sorry, everybody. I just, uh, learned an important lesson. It doesn't matter if I wear an expensive suit, it doesn't matter if I have a fancy degree, a great job. I swear when that cop looked at me, all he saw was black.
Stuart: (to Carter) Well, that cop's a fool. When I look at you, I see a friend, I see a coworker. But most importantly, I see a big fruit.
Carter: (smiles with Stuart) Thanks a lot, Stewart. That's the first time I smiled all day.
Stuart: Then I take it you weren't strip-searched?
