Cartoon Net announces new shows

The Cartoon Network showed off its upcoming offerings for the rest of 2006 to advertisers this morning at the network's annual kids upfront breakfast. The cable net announced plans to air its first original film combining live action and animation, and that it will bring back hit Ben 10, and will premiere Class of 3000, a series created by Andre 3000 of Outkast.

In the original movie Re-Animated, the first Cartoon Network movie to combine live action and animation, a 12-year-old boy needs surgery to receive a new brain. This may sound like a parent's dream come true, but there is a catch: The only brain available is the frozen one of a famous animator. Upon waking up from surgery, Jimmy discovers he can see animated characters that no one else can.

In Class of 3000, Outkast singer ...

Bowie swims with SpongeBob

Modern love got him to the church on time, but fatherly love gets him to the recording booth.

David Bowie has announced he has voiced a character who will appear on the hit animated kids' show SpongeBob SquarePants next year. The 59-year-old music legend plays the role of Lord Royal Highness for the Nickelodeon series.

Today Bowie blogged that, "I've hit the Holy Grail of animation gigs. Yesterday I got to be a character on...tan-tara...SpongeBob SquarePants. Oh Yeah!!"

Bowie has said before that his six-year-old daughter, Alexandria, is a huge fan of SpongeBob.

"We, the family, are thrilled," he wrote on his Web site. "Nothing else need happen this year, well, this week anyway."

Bowie has starred in a number of interesting films and TV projects. In 1986, he played Jareth the Goblin King in the puppet-filled movie Labyrinth, and in 1996's Basquiat he played the ...

SpongeBob lures record audience

Nickelodeon hit SpongeBob SquarePants absorbed its biggest audience ever in a special prime-time episode that aired Monday.

The Lost in Time special drew 8.6 million total viewers and 5.2 million kids ages 2-11, making it the biggest audience of the year to date among children, behind the Super Bowl. The episode was also the highest-rated program on Nickelodeon in about five years.

Another Nick series notched a personal best Monday morning, with preschool series Go, Diego, Go! reaching 1.4 million viewers among kids ages 2-5 and 3 million viewers total.

This week brings a bit of a lull in the recent storm of DVD action, but that's not to say there aren't a few gems available. Animation fans will rejoice over new releases from SpongeBob SquarePants and Goof Troop, comedy buffs will love 3rd Rock From the Sun, and no one can argue with a season-three set from NYPD Blue. Enjoy!

Healthy living with SpongeBob SquarePants

SpongeBob SquarePants is taking a hint from PBS and getting into the granola game. This June PBS Kids launched its "Happy Healthy Summer" initiative, a campaign that urges children to exercise more and eat healthier foods by offering suggestions through popular kids' TV shows. Blue Sesame Street monster Grover has been making cameo appearances on PBS Kids programs to deliver health messages, and pbskids.org is offering advice to parents on how to keep their kids active and healthy.

Nickelodeon, home to SpongeBob, has been making an effort with its "Let's Just Play" campaign, which encourages kids to get off the couch and live a little. The network is now making licensing deals with produce companies, and its characters will soon endorse fruits and ...

Nick study suggests best way to target kids

Unveiling marketing research about children aged 6-14, the Nickelodeon cable network suggested Tuesday that advertisers focus more of their marketing efforts on the people kids perceive as the influencers in such categories as music, sports, movies, fashion, video games, and the Internet.

The research, presented to Nickelodeon advertisers and promotional partners at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills, also indicated that the kids population is more ethnically diverse than that of the overall US population; that kids today are watching more television and consuming more media overall; that 28 percent of kids own their own cell phones; and that mobile phones, laptop computers, and video game consoles rank at the top of kids' technology wish lists.

Nickelodeon senior vp consumer insights Marsha Williams presented data from the cable network's 2005 US multicultural kids study that indicated that 44 percent ...

SpongeBob SquarePants is one of Nickelodeon's highest-rated cartoons for children and a staple of American television. It was created by marine biologist Stephen Hillenburg during his tenure as a teacher at the Ocean Institute in California. The show follows the adventures of an eternally optimistic sea sponge named SpongeBob who works at a fast food restaurant, attends a boating school, and lives in an underwater pineapple. The program stars a colorful cast of ten main characters and takes place in the subsurface town of Bikini Bottom. The series won 4 Emmy Awards for Outstanding Special Class Animated Program, Outstanding Sound Editing - Animation, Outstanding Performer in an Animated Program - Tom Kenny for playing SpongeBob SquarePants and Outstanding Children’s Animated Series.

SpongeBob SquarePants - The main character of the series and a selfless creature whose sunny attitude is his trademark. He works as a fry cook at the Krusty Krab, Bikini Bottom's premier daytime eatery. He is known throughout town for the delicious Krabby Patty burgers he makes. SpongeBob is perpetually enrolled in boating school, the underwater equivalent of a driver's education course. He lives in a submerged pineapple home with his pet snail Gary.

Mr. Krabs - SpongeBob's boss at the Krusty Krab. He lives in an anchor with his teenage daughter, Pearl the whale. While Mr. Krabs often acts as a fatherly figure to SpongeBob, he is very cheap and frequently lets his obsession with money cloud his judgment. He loves sailing, talks like a pirate, and is in a romantic relationship with SpongeBob's teacher Mrs. Puff.

Squidward Tentacles - A snobbish octopus who is SpongeBob's next-door neighbor and coworker at the Krusty Krab. He is pessimistic and despises SpongeBob for his enthusiastic attitude. Squidward's favorite hobby is playing his clarinet, but he is not very skilled at it. He also fancies himself a talented artist and keeps countless self portraits around his house.

Patrick Star - Patrick is a pink starfish who is SpongeBob's best friend. He is dimwitted and clueless when it comes to almost anything; after all, he lives under a rock. He is always quick to give SpongeBob unintentionally bad advice that lands them both in trouble. Despite his obliviousness to the world around him, Patrick is enduringly loyal and generally good-natured.

Sheldon J. Plankton - The arch-rival of Mr. Krabs and the owner of a failing rival restaurant called the Chum Bucket. With the help of his sentient computer Karen, Plankton is always trying to steal the Krusty Krab's secret recipe for Krabby Patties. SpongeBob has a knack for unintentionally thwarting Plankton's efforts without even trying.

Karen Plankton - Plankton's sidekick and wife who supplies him with his evil schemes. She is a computer system that he builds into most of his diabolical inventions. Most of the time, Karen manifests on a screen in the Chum Bucket laboratory or in a mobile robot body. She usually acts as Plankton's voice of reason.

Sandy Cheeks - A thrill-seeking cowgirl squirrel from the state of Texas who wears a diving suit and lives in a dome full of air. She has a passion for extreme sports and enjoys practicing karate with SpongeBob. When she is not searching for adventure, Sandy can be found working as a scientist and inventor.

Mrs. Puff - SpongeBob's teacher at the town boating school and the girlfriend of Mr. Krabs. She tries her best to be patient with SpongeBob, as he is her most enthusiastic student, but finds his reckless boat-driving exhausting. SpongeBob has failed her class more times than she can count, but he only seems to grow more passionate about driving with each failure.

Pearl Krabs - A teenage whale who is Mr. Krabs' beloved daughter. She will inherit the Krusty Krab when she grows up, but she doesn't know or care much about fast food at all. Pearl is clever for her age, especially when it comes to math or getting money from her father, but she is still immature.

Gary the Snail - SpongeBob's pet sea snail who communicates through cat-like meows and other unintelligible noises. Surprisingly, he is the most civilized member of the cast and outsmarts his owner on a regular basis. He leaves a trail of sticky slime wherever he goes.
