Episode Summary

EDIT
The Great Snail Race: When Squidward gets a purebred snail named Snelle, SpongeBob challenges him in the great snail race. SpongeBob trains Gary very hard to beat Squidward and Snelle. Patrick has a "snail" of his own for the race, which is a rock. At the snail race, Gary is in bad shape and SpongeBob hollers at Gary to get up, while Snelle heads straight to the finish line. Right when Snelle is a small step to the finish line, she turns back and makes friends with Gary, while Patrick's rock wins by a longshot.
Mid-Life Crustacean: When Mr. Krabs feels like an aging old man, he tries to feel young again, so he comes with SpongeBob and Patrick for a night on the town. It turns out that the stops Mr. Krabs, SpongeBob, and Patrick go to are lame. Then, they go on a panty raid, but the house they strike at turns out to be Mama Krabs' house, and Krabs' mother sends Mr. Krabs to his room (well, at least he feels like a kid again and learning what it is like).moreless

  • Fantastic Episodes

    9.5
*"The Great Snail Race"- in that episode, SpongeBob was pressuring Gary into winning the snail race after Squidward got a snail. At the end, Gary and Snelly became a couple and SpongeBob got kicked by Sandy (probably because of SpongeBob being insulting).

*"Mid-Life Crustacean"- Mr. Krabs was feeling self-pity about his age and wants to feel younger like SpongeBob and Patrick. But after seeing the results, Mr. Krabs abandons the two because of how "lame" they really are. But in the final scene, he then went on a panty raid and was later punished.

Both of those episodes made me laugh. But what I couldn't believe is that the final scene of "Mid-Life Crustacean" has something that seem a little adult-oriented. Nick didn't even care about that. Oh well. I still like that episode.moreless
  • Worst season 3 episode paired with a good episode

    5.0
The Great Snail Race: It was nice that SpongeBob was trying to defend Gary's honor, but he does it by driving him to exhaustion and even causing him to break apart like an old racecar. It's really cruel, especially the scene where Gary's EYE EXPLODES and we even get to see machinery inside his shell. And it was all worth nothing because Rocky still won anyway. 3.0/10.00

Mid-Life Krustacean: While far from the BEST episode, I still found it pretty good. There are some funny jokes, and seeing Mr. Krabs snap was actually fun. The panty raid thing was odd, but Mr Krabs does get into trouble for it. 7.0/10.0moreless
  • 22 minutes of complete sh*t

    1.0
I love Spongebob, but like most shows, there are cons about it. These two episodes are cons.

Great Snail Race- This episode was sh*t, but not as bad as the next 11 minutes of rhinoceros manure. The only parts that I liked were when Sandy showed up. My favorite part was when Sandy kicked Spongebobs butt at the end. Most of this episode until the f*cked up sh*t is just not watchable. During the race, Spongebob acts like a complete f*cking idiot, and so do the many d*ckfaces at the race. I can't describe the rest, this episode sucks, however the only thing that is good in this episode is Sandy.

    0.5/5

    Mid-Life Crustacean-

This is the worst episode from Spongebob ever. Every part in this episode is bad. Spongebob, Patrick and Mr. Krabs go around bikini bottom doing guy stuff. The part that is the biggest f*ck-up was when they went to a f*cking daycare center. The f*cking kids pester Mr. Krabs like f*cking morons, and then Mr. Krabs bursts out like a f*cking idiot. Then we get to the part where they go through Mr. Krabs mothers underwear drawers, THIS IS F*CKING HORRIBLE PEOPLE. Mr. Krabs mother grounds Mr. Krabs like he is a f*cking c*cks*cker. I have nothing else to say about this horrible piece of f*cking sh*t.

  • One was hilarious, and another was just not the best, with the feel of a Season 5 episode.

    6.5
Great Snail Race: This is the one that I thought was not so good. It lacked lots of humor and Spongebob was being a jerk to be mean to Gary like that. It was disgusting how Gary blew a fuse. It was too romantic the relationship between Snelly and Gary and reminds me of a Season 5 episode called To Love a Patty. They are both disgusting in their own ways. I think this is also one of the worsts of Season 3. It was actually one of the best seasons, but this episode is a bad example of that. Don't watch it. 3.5/10

Mid-Life Crustacean: This was hilarious. Another successful Season 3 episode. Some guy says that the pantie raid was inappropriate. Man, that was the funniest part. Perfect for all ages and highly entertaining. It was funny how they humiliated Mr. Krabs even more when they had to do the opposite. Solid: Except when loud voices come on, but the rest was great. 9.5/10moreless
  • Great Snail Race/Mid Life Crustacean

    1.0
Great Snail Race was a great episode that I really enjoyed. Mid Life Crustacean is my least favorite episode overall. It sexual suggestions about "pantie raiding" is not appropriate for children at all. I'm not sure what children's program where this content would be acceptable. My six year old does not need to hear about stealing girl's panties, period. If he got into that, it should be at an age where he can understand sexuality. I really started paying attention to SpongeBob episodes after I saw that one.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (40)

    • Near the end of this episode, Mrs. Krabs grounds Mr. Krabs, except Mr. Krabs is an adult, groundings are usually reserved for children.

    • How could Mr. Krabs not recognize his own mother's house?

    • Sandy only shows up twice in "The Great Snail Race." The first time around is where SpongeBob calls Gary a lady to humiliate him as motivational tactic; Sandy is seen afterwards. The only other time was to kick SpongeBob for the statement he said earlier, which she believed was sexist toward women. Note: Sandy is a girl.

    • If the show is aimed at kids, why would a panty raid be included? It is a considerably more mature event that does not seem to fit in with the kid-friendly aspect of the show.

    • Shouldn't Snelly had already won the snail race by then? Snelly didn't go to the finish line, plus, she disqualified herself to comfort Gary.

    • In "Mid-Life Crustacean," Pearl tells her friend on the phone that, "coral is DEFINITELY out," but in latter episodes, her and her friends still refer to cool things as "Coral."

    • Lightning Larry Luciano was the champion of the snail races, but now he has lost his touch.

    • Wasn't it EXTREMELY rude for the lady at the Krusty Krab to call Mr. Krabs dried out and old so he can hear her? And couldn't she have been kicked out for that?

    • Mr. Krabs doesn't act greedy in "Mid-Life Crustacean".

    • In Great Snail Race, on one seen Spongebobs pants were red

    • In "Mid-Life Crustacean," when the boy in the Krusty Krab says his patty tastes funny, Mr. Krabs takes it out of the garbage and it hasn't had a single bite taken out of it.

    • In this episode, Patrick was treating his snail better than Squidward or SpongeBob, who were shouting at their snails.

    • It couldnt have been Mrs. Krabs' house they went in, because when it showed them going up the ladder, the house was purple, but in other episodes, their house is a light pink!

    • At the end of the snail race, right before Sandy kicks SpongeBob, SpongeBob's mustache is gone!

    • Running Gag: Everyone messing up on Squidward's last name, Tentacles.

    • When Gary blows out under his shell, there's an engine, but in other episodes, it is just an empty room.

    • How did Patrick's rock actually win?

    • When Mr. Krabs' mom made him sleep at home, who was looking after Pearl?

Reply: Pearl's a teenager. She can look after herself.

    • In the announcer's office, you can see a poster of a snail wearing a crown who looks similar to Gary.

    • The first and last appearance of Squidward's pet snail Snellie.

    • The music for the title card of "The Great Snail Race" sounded like the "Now That We're Men" song from the movie, but how could they use it then, when the movie did not come out till 2004?

    • Wouldn't Mr. Krabs recognize the house they were going to panty raid as his mother's?

    • When Patrick is looking at the Pedigree certificate, he says "Property of Squidward . . . Tentpoles." But the closed caption says "Pimples."

    • Earlier, Gary blew a hole in his shell, but after Gary stopped going out of control and SpongeBob went to comfort Gary. His shell is fixed.

    • There were 3 racers in the race. (One strait away for each snail.) But when Gary was spinning out of control, he was moving around the track, and 7 Strait aways can bee seen when he is spinning out.

    • Patrick and his rock are nowhere in sight when Songebob is running towards Gary after he crashed. Also, Songebob got disqualified for running onto the track. Patrick should be disqualified too because he obviously gave his rock outside help. (Unless the wind blew and knocked it across the finish line, what a cop-out that would be.)

    • In the scene where Gary's eye is laying on the track, Spongebob's pant leg is blue, and not red.

    • Snelly was 1 foot away from the finish line then it cuts to Spongebob apoligising to Gary. But it takes about 15 seconds or so for it to cut back to Snelly ,after the apoligising, who is suddenly 2 feet away from the finish line. Did she stop or go backwards or something during that 15 second period?... I don't think so...

    • When Squidward looked in the window, we see Patrick on top, but where did the second window come from?

    • Look at the door Squidward and Patrick are next to when they're sticking their heads through Spongebob's windows. It's meant to be SB's front door, but from the inside, it's a different door! (It's not metal.)

    • Since when have Spongebob two windows on the left side?
In all the other episodes he have one on the right side and one on the left side.

    • In this episode when you see the contestants it's only Spogebob, Squidward and Patrick but on their snails the numbers are 5,6, and 7(or something like that, you get the picture anyway, right?)

    • In "The Great Snail Race," Gary crashed in the wall, but when SpongeBob ran on the track, Gary was back on the track.

    • This may seem kinda obvious but,the tire wall that Gary crashed into was never there before.

    • When Gary was spinning out of control, there were at least 5 lanes on the track but before there was only 3.

    • When the firemen came to put Gary out,ALL the tires were gone.

    • In "The Great Snail Race", SpongeBob said that he didn't know Squidward's last name but in "Artist Unknown", when Squidward was the Spongebob's art teacher Spongebob called him "Mr. Tentacles" which is Squidward's last name.

    • When the part where Spongebob ran onto the race track, the entire track could be seen and Patrick's rock was not on the race track at all. It appeared again when it won the race. (I paused the VHS)

    • In the scene where Patrick is standing on Squidward as they look through a window, you can clearly see out Squidward's window over his head; however, in that shot, Patrick's not standing on top of him.

    • In one scene Sponges shoes are white w/ red and blue stripes instead of blue w/ white stripes

      Gary: Meow
Spongebob: I did? Oh Gary, why didn't you tell me I wasn't listening?
      Gary: Meow
      Spongebob: Oh Gary...

    • Mama Krabs: Eugene, what are you doing with my bloomers?
Mr. Krabs: It's all SpongeBob and Patrick's idea! (to SpongeBob and Patrick) Why didn't you tell me this was me mother's house?!
      SpongeBob: Well, you didn't ask.

    • Announcer [The Fake One]: I am a big fan. No, really, I'm just a fan. The door was open, and I just...

Mr. Krabs: I guess... I am feeling a warm spot.
      Patrick: Sorry.

    • Squidward: Snellie here is a PURE-BREED snail!
Patrick: You have a snail made of bread?

    • Mr. Krabs: (looking at Pearl's "breakfast") So, I see you've gotten creative with the bran again.
Pearl: Yup, and it's time for the pill!
(Pearl slams a giant blue-and-yellow pill on the table)
Mr. Krabs: Aw, I hate the pill!

  • NOTES (23)

  • ALLUSIONS (7)

    • Fish: So long, dorks!

The fish who calls SpongeBob, Patrick and Mr. Krabs dorks is similar to Kevin, who calls the Eds dorks all the time from Ed, Edd and Eddy.

    • Mr. Krabs' Mid-Life Crisis
Mr. Krabs' mid-life crisis was similar to The Fairly Odd Parents episode, "The Crimson Chin Meets Mighty Mom and Dyno Dad/Engine Blocked."

    • Patrick: Go Rocky!
Lots of references of Rocky is available in this episode. The way Spongebob trains Gary is the same as the way Rocky's trainer, Mickey Goldmill trains. Squidwards behaviour of asking Spongebob to compete in the race is almost the same as the way Apollo Creed behaves when asking Rocky Balboa to compete against each other. And last but not least the name of Patrick's snail, which is of course Rocky.

    • Spongebob: Art thou feeling it now, Mr. Krabs?
The game Spongebob, Patrick, and Mr. Krabs are playing is similar to Dungeons & Dragons, a very popular Role Playing Game in the '80's.

    • K-Old was the name of the radio station listened to by Grandpa Lou (David Doyle) in an episode of "Rugrats."

    • Announcer's Mug: I Love Bikini Bottom
The announcer's mug says "I Love BB (Bikini Bottom)", an obvious reference to the slogan of New York City, "I Love New York (NY)".

    • Mayor: Here to light the flame is Lucky Larry Luciano (the Snail)!
"Lucky" Lucianno (the snail that lit the flame in Oyster Stadium") was the leader of the Chicago Mafia from the 1940s through '70s after the arrest of Al Capone and the death of Frank Nitti.
