  • One of the first bad episodes.

    1.0
OMG, I completely forgot about this one until now. This is only the SECOND bad episode of the Golden Age, after Party Pooper Pants (SpongeBob's House Party). I'm talking to Amazing, by the way.

UPDATE ON FEBRUARY 2 (originally posted last year on July 19): Nick has an upcoming show called Breadwinners that airs in 20 days. Today I found the pilot on YouTube and showed it to my family. EVERYONE HATED IT! They all said it was the worst thing they'd seen in their lives. And that includes The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure (2012), Spider's Web: A Pig's Tale (2006), and Rabbids Invasion. So I won't be surprised when Breadwinners gets a 1.9 just like Marvin Marvin here at and Spider's Web: A Pig's Tale at IMDb. My Aunt said I should rate it as low as possible just to get the score down. Unfortunately, the lowest one can rate is 1, unless you are a prolific author. I have been working on that for months (6 plus months), so I can rate stuff like Marvin Marvin, Fred: The Show, and The Oogieloves a 0.0. Breadwinners is next on my "to rate 0.0 once I can" list.

UPDATE ON FEBRUARY 18: Breadwinners premiered yesterday. I have reviewed it. It's bad but not as bad as Sanjay and Craig.moreless
  • One Of My Personal Favorites

    10
I guess I'm really surprised to see such negative reviews for this episode. I remember watching this episode on its first airing. I was 8 years old, sitting in the living room with my Mom and Dad. I loved it, especially the great musical numbers in this special. Then I remember Nick not playing it much. Actually, for whatever reason, they barely ever aired it. Maybe that's part of the reason I love it so much. Unlike many other classic Spongebob episodes I've seen hundreds of times, I've only seen this one a handful of times, so this episode still feels fresh to me. Same thing goes for "Spongebob's House Party".moreless
  • Never was my cup of tea

    5.0
To be honest, this is the third worst special ever...I was never fond of this special at all. It was too boring and the storyline could have done much better. Patchy's segment was mixed, it ranges from annoying to a few funny parts. BTW, some of the funny parts were the first part of the SpongeBob segment, Patrick thinking about SpongeBob's grandpa, SpongeBob is actually fly when a hairdryer is on his pants, and a couple more parts. The songs here were very good...somehow better than those musicals in Altantis SquarePantis. The reason why i didn't like this episode very much are the flaws and there's a bit of them...some of the Patchy parts (I as said before) were annoying like when he was on the kid's playground, later he loses respects for SpongeBob, etc. Other flaws are the citizen of Bikini Bottom (would have been better if they weren't involve that much) and one more I forgot. Overall this is a mediocre special and I thought it was a tad better than Ugh. 5/10moreless
  • Why so much hate...?

    8.5
In the episode, SpongeBob is jellyfishing when he notices how awesome it must be to fly like a jellyfish. He goes home to invent a flying machine. After several failed attempts, Bob ties himself to a kite and Patrick pulls him on his bike. This succeeds, but everyone in town ridicules him. "But it's my dream!" shouts SpongeBob. "But what about our dreams!?" shout the townspeople. "I wanted to be a concert pianist," says one. "until I noticed I don't have any fingers." SpongeBob's kite gives out, sending him into a truck of feathers. Cut to commercial. And we're back! SpongeBob is blow-drying his hair when he gets a phone-call. He picks up the phone (a phone in his bathroom?). He sticks the blow-drier in his pocket. The phone inquires for "Birdman." While SpongeBob argues, his pants inflate. "Oof! Sorry, I have to go, my head just hit the ceiling. ...GASP!" SpongeBob shows his flying pants to the world. The citizens are amazed, and SpongeBob is the hero. SpongeBob begins saving kittens, cleaning hard-to-reach spaces, and rescuing people in high places that couldn't be reached before his amazing pants. The public loves them. But SpongeBob wants to be free with the jellyfish, but everyone needs him to do hero-like stuff. SpongeBob tries to get to Jellyfish Fields, but Cannonball Jenkins shoots him down. His pants pop. SpongeBob lies on the ground unconscious. The fish walk over to him. "We need to have a proper burial." says one, and picks up the pants. "These were one good pair of pants." SpongeBob wakes up, notices he's in his underwear and not flying. He's crestfallen, and walks over to his jellyfish buddies. But to his surprise, the jellyfish get under his feet and take him soaring through the sky! Flying with his friends is what SpongeBob wanted in the first place. Break into a heartwarming song about flying and friendship. This episode was not as bad as everyone says it is, Jeez.

  • Boring!

A tape of a SpongeBob episode was found under a desk at Nickelodeon, and Patchy has it! Then he lost it, and Potty and Patchy go on a quest to find it that lasts a few minutes. They find it in a treasure chest buried above land. They put it in, only to see a tape of SpongeBob going through walk cycles. Outraged, Patchy throws away all his SpongeBob mechandise. Then a sign pops on the TV screen, saying "the REAL lost episode will play in 10...9...8.." Patchy replaces all his stuff and sits down to watch.

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (23)

    • Old Man Jenkins changes again. He was a giant blue fish with a green shirt in "Sailor Mouth." Then, he was a blue fish with brown pants in "My Pretty Seahorse." Now, he's a gray fish in this episode.

    • A list of SpongeBob's attempts to fly, and why they all failed:

An airplane: SpongeBob tried to fly the airplane, but the front blade flew off.

Plastic wings: SpongeBob couldn't hold himself in the air long enough, and he fell to the ground.

Lawnchair with balloons: SpongeBob removed the brick that was keeping the lawnchair from flying, and the lawnchair flew away before he could get on.

A kite and a bike: SpongeBob tried to attach himself to a kite and have Patrick pedal a bike with the kite attached to it, but the bike lost altitude, and Patrick rode the bike with the kite on the ground.

Inflatable pants: Cannonball Jenkins blew up SpongeBob's pants because SpongeBob refused to do any more favors for the citizens of Bikini Bottom.

    • When SpongeBob is trying to get to Jellyfish Fields and the boy spots him, look at the guy who says, "No, he owes us favors!". He is wearing an outfit very similar to SpongeBob's.

    • When the clerk at the store SpongeBob is returning his kite to and shows him the newspaper, it shows SpongeBob in his beach outfit rather than his normal outfit.

    • When SpongeBob flies over to change the light bulb in the lighthouse, the boat is moving pretty fast into the big rocks and is about to hit it, but it took SpongeBob a few seconds to switch the light bulb and the boat would have definitely hit it by then, but it didn't.

    • Why would SpongeBob even try to learn how to fly? It's impossible to fly in the sea, anyway, or in other terms, their version of flying is swimming. So how come he didn't just swim up and down on the water. In fact, why doesn't he just swim instead of walk?

    • In this episode, SpongeBob tries to invent a flying machine (airplane), but, if you look later in the episode, you see a modern day plane. There was also the plane in "Club SpongeBob" that dropped the load, as well as an airplane in the "Tattletale Strangler" episode.

    • When he's tied to the kite with Patrick on the bicycle, he passes a group of people. There's a close up of SpongeBob and then a general shot again. He's just passing the people.

    • Running Gag: Mr. Jenkins getting messed up by SpongeBob and saying he told you nothing would come from city folks and their flying machines.

    • When Patchy tells Potty to "hit the remote," Potty lays an egg on it. Potty can't do that because he's a male bird.

    • For a few seconds when SpongeBob is flying, directly after his pants have been inflated, and he is flying in the sky singing, his collar disappears. Soon after, it reappears. A few seconds later, it disappears again.

    • At one point, SpongeBob tries to fly in a Batsuit, an obvious reference to Batman. At one point, there is a close up of SpongeBob's butt in the suit. This could be a reference to the constant close-ups of Val Kilmer and George Clooney's butts in their Bat suits in Batman Forever and Batman and Robin, respectively.

    • One Video can't have enough tape to fill up the room.

    • Spongebob builds a plane and said he "invented" a flying machine. Later in the episode we see him fly by a jet.

    • How could SpongeBob not know how to fly when we saw him fly by inflating himself in, "Wormy" and by getting tied to a balloon in "Rock Bottom?"

    • When Patchy puts the video in, he tells Polly to hit the remote. Polly drops an egg on it, but in the next shot, the remote is completely clean.

    • Patchy's hook was always on his right hand. But when he was on the swings, and when he throwing away his Spongebob stuff, the hook was on his left hand.

    • Old Man Jenkins looks different, again

    • Patchy's eyepatch kept switching eyes.

    • Mrs.Puff's snail looked like Snellie

    • When they took SpongeBob's pants off his sleeves were still on him.

    • Shouldn't all the people have called Spongebob "Scallop Man" instead of "Bird Man" since after all, scallops are supposed to be like birds?

    • When Tom says "He found my hairpiece!" with hair, he sounded like a female.

  • QUOTES (13)

    • SpongeBob: Listen up, Joe! I hate to break it to you, but flying is impossible.

    • Patchy: (angered by the pre-lost-episode segment) GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR... SPONGEBOB BETRAYED US!!! (knocks down all the SpongeBob SquarePants portraits off his wall) AUGH! I'm sorry I ever started this stupid fan club in the first place!
(starts getting rid of every piece of SpongeBob merchandising he has) I'm gonna get rid of all my SpongeBob stuff! ALL OF IT! ALL OF IT!! (rips out his SpongeBob SquarePants boxers) All of it! I'm gonna run away! That's what I'll do! Run away! (cries in agony as he walks out his door and it closes)
      Potty: Jeez, what a hothead.
Announcer on Tape: And now, the real lost episode.
Potty: (squawks excitedly) Patchy, come back! There's more!
      (Patchy quickly comes back in)
      Patchy: Really?!
(everything he's done after his anger goes in reverse, and Patchy returns excitedly to his seat)
      Patchy: HOORAY!! Let's watch!

    • Patchy: Oh, no! I've ruined the lost episode! Now it's lost forever!
      Potty: SQUAWK! Lost forever!
Narrator: Oh, boy, what a loser. Well, tape or no tape, as long as there are stars in the sky, SpongeBob will live on in our hearts and in our minds. Now get lost, I mean good-bye. No, really, get lost.

    • Patrick: (laughing at flying contraption) It's like my Grandpa used to say...
Grandpa SquarePants: (appears in thought bubble) If we were meant to fly... hey, I'm not your grandfather!

    • SpongeBob: (About to sing) Hey, my jellyfish friends are helping me fly! (sings) You don't need a plane to fly. Plastic wings'll make you cry. Kites are made for windy days. Lawn Chairs with ballons fly away. Inflatable pants: YOU MIGHT AS WELL SKIP!! (shows a funeral for SpongeBob's destroyed pants) If you ever need to fly, all you need...is friendship.

    • Spongebob: Even Plankton needs some help when he's stuck in the kelp!
Plankton: Would you put me down!?

    • Patrick: So, Spongebob wanna go flying?
Spongebob: No thanks. My flying days are over.
      Patrick: Suit yourself. (Flies away.)
Spongebob: Did Patrick just...ah! (Looks above.)

    • Patchy: That's it? That's the lost episode? THAT WAS JUST A BUNCH OF CHEAP WALK CYCLES!!!
      Potty: What a rip.

    • Patrick: We should stay away from him, he knows how to grow food!

    • Old Man Jenkins: I told you no good would come from you city folks and your flyin' machines!

    • Spongebob: No this is not the "BirdMan" of Bikini Bottom. No i do not live in a birdcage. Who Is this? Joe Momma?

    • Patrick: Can we have cake now? Happy Happy Birthday to you!

    • Interviewed Fish: Umm... He Helps People, and he flys, and he helps people.

  • NOTES (16)

  • ALLUSIONS (3)

    • The scene where SpongeBob tries to fly using a Batman costume is a reference to the much-ridiculed warning label on many childrens' superhero costumes which reads, "WARNING: For play only; cape does not enable user to fly."

    • The episode is very similar to the story of the Wright Brothers.

    • Spongebob: Trying Various Ways to Fly
The scene where he ties balloons to a lawnchair, Steve Hillenburg got from a guy who tried this in California. (He had to be rescued in the stratusphere.)
