The mailfish says that SpongeBob received "another one of these yellow things" (actually SpongeBob), which could mean he is sent by post many times.

Fish: (laughs) Don't forget "Platitudenous!"
SpongeBob: Curse you, Mr. Magic Magical Magic Kit! Curse you. Hey, that's it!
Patrick: (reading the wrong label) Warning, from ages 9- 99.
Squidward: (comes outside) It's too quiet. Something isn't right about here. (looks through SpongeBob's window)
SpongeBob: This isn't good.
Patrick: You're right. Needs mustard.
SpongeBob: I turned my friend into an ice cream.
Magician: Good job!
SpongeBob: What is that thing?
Patrick: I don't know. Let's get a closer look.
SpongeBob: Hi there, stranger, I am SpongeBob. Wait a second, maybe he's not a monster? Maybe he's an endangered species? (Squidward moans) We should help him!
Patrick: (laughing) Yeah, help him. Go away can't you tell nobody wants you! You're endangered!
SpongeBob: Not like that, Pat, we need to take Smelly home.
Squidward: (groaning) Shaking his trying to shake his head to say no.
SpongeBob: Well, Smelly, here we are, your new home. Ah, this will be great. Smelly will be one big happy family. Let me show you around, here's your bed Smelly. (Squidward moans seeing his new bed) Here's your food bowl.
Patrick: And some kibble. (pouring snail kibble in the bowl and eating some)
SpongeBob: You can live here forever and ever. (Squidward starts crying) Oh, look at that, Patrick, he's crying tears of joy.
SpongeBob: Well, Smelly, there's one more family member you haven't met. Smelly, meet Gary. Oh, look at that, Smelly! Gary likes you! (Gary attacks Squidward) Gary! No!
Patrick: I don't think Gary likes Smelly.
SpongeBob: Yeah, Gary never attacked anyone like that. Except Squidward, I guess Smelly can't live here.
Patrick: Oh, he can come and live with me!
SpongeBob: That's a great idea, Pat! You've always wanted a pet of your own! (Squidward tries to escape) Oh, look, Pat! He's so excited to get to your house! Goodbye, Smelly! Have fun with Patrick!
Squidward: Can a hard working Squid get some T.V. time alone? (sighs) SpongeBob! Patrick! Oh.. what's the point.
Patrick: Could you turn it up?
SpongeBob: Ah, Squidward, could you turn it down a little?
Patrick: Squidward, what's this about?
SpongeBob: Squidward, how come he's so emotional?
Patrick: Is he the bad guy?
SpongeBob: Squidward?
Patrick: Squidward?
SpongeBob: Squidward?
Patrick: Squidward?
SpongeBob: Squidward?
Patrick: Squidward?
Squidward: (screaming) THAT'S IT! All I wanted to do was to watch some smooth jazz on public telivision, but apparently that's not gonna happen. Once again, I'm gonna have to leave my own home just to get some peace and quite. Argh! Enjoy my TV, fpheh.
Patrick: What?! I can't hear you because I'm screaming too loud!
Patrick: Spongebob, since you can turn Squidward into an ice cream, can you turn me into mayonnaise so I can eat myself?
SpongeBob: Sure, buddy. Patricko Mayonnaiso.

"The Thing" is also the name of an old horror movie.
Sniz and Fondue
The song that played when Patrick was calling was the theme song to Kablam's "Sniz and Fondue."
Squidward as a look-like creature looks like the little creatures from the Gamecube game Pikmin.
The Simpsons
One of SpongeBob's sayings to "turn Squidward back to normal" is that he says "Oklie-Dokille", which is Ned Flander's catchphrase on The Simpsons.
SpongeBob's Outfit
The Beard and Wizard hat that SpongeBob wears from his Magic kit kind of makes him look like Merlin from the Disney film The Sword in the Stone.
Episode Title: The Thing
This episode is based off a movie called The Thing in 1982 from Universal Studios directed by John Carpenter. The story isn't as similar to this episode, but close enough as it is.
Episode Title: The Thing
This episode is similar to an old song by Phil Harris in 1950.
Mr. Magic: Appearance
Mr. Magic (or at least the hologram) looks like Jambi the Genie, from Pee Wee's Playhouse.
The Thing: Title Card
The title card is similar to the one used for the Jimmy Neutron episode, "Carl Wheezer, Boy Genius/The Evil Beneath."
Mr. Magic's Image
Mr. Magic's true image was sort of like in the That's So Raven episode, "Soup to Nuts," when Victor pretends to be a big head, but when they see him, he is just exercising.
The Wizard of Oz
In "Hocus Pocus," Mr. Magic hides behind a curtain and talks into a machine which allows the bigger and different image of himself to say whatever he says, this is a parody of the 1939 film, The Wizard of Oz. In addition, SpongeBob and Patrick walking up to Mr. Magic's castle on the brown tile road is similar to Dorothy and her friends going down the yellow brick road. Also, Patrick discovering the real Mr. Magic (though he didn't understand why the two were saying the same thing) was similar to Toto pulling back a curtain to reveal the wizard's true form. Plus, SpongeBob yelling at Mr. Magic for ruining his faith in magic is similar to Dorothy yelling at the wizard for lying to people. However, unlike the wizard who felt bad and helped Dorothy and her friends, Mr. Magic had SpongeBob and Patrick thrown out of his castle.
Episode Title: Hocus Pocus
The episode title "Hocus Pocus" is an allusion to a movie with the same name.
The Thing
In the Fantastic Four, there is a superhero called The Thing.
