  • A requiem for Ros

It's may be a cliché to say it, but whenever the action moved to Thames House there was a Ros-shaped hole at the heart of Spooks. Nobody was directing the action.

Her impending replacement, bumptious Beth Bailey (Sophie Myles – back from being a Vampire's sidekick in Moonlight) is cute, but seems to have swallowed a plum tree on her flight back from L.A. And Beth's embryonic character lacked the stripped-down plausibility of Ros. (Compare the way Rupert Penry-Jones entered the series and took control.) Although I'm sure she'll grow.

Also noticeably stripped down was the budget. The Moroccan port of Tangier looked liked Southampton Docks; no matter how many filters are used, there is still something unmistakable about English clouds. And a climatic EMP--while undeniably cool and illuminating the themes of the plot--seemed like a cheap workaround for a big explosion. And you just know that if Ros had been there, there'd've been a big explosion.moreless
